Muncie is the county seat of Howard County. In 1907, the city of Muncie merged with the neighboring village of Stillwater to form what is now known as Muncie-Stillwater. The name of the city changed again in 1956 to honor General George Armstrong Custer, who fought in the American Civil War and died in battle at Little Bighorn on July 25, 1876. Another noteworthy place where residents have gathered since early days include Centennial Park on North High Street which had been organized as a public square by Deputy Mayor Isaac Franks prior to becoming home to several businesses including a grocery store, bank, doctor’s office and theater until it burned down in 1922 due to arson efforts by local youths during prohibition-era prohibition riots across town (the first night alcohol was sold legally in America). Today there are numerous attractions within close proximity ofmunicipal boundaries including Arroyo College - one of three colleges within Archer County - The Museum Of Art & Science - home of world’s largest collection of modern art - Ball State University - one of five universities within Butler County - Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Research Center on West Washington Boulevard – home to world’s largest collection of rubber products dating back more than seventy years - IUPUI's IMAX theatre also located just outside town on Southside Drive
