Roosevelt (1929-1945) all lived here; actor Forrest Gump was born here; basketball player Julius Erving played for both Northville High School and Purdue University during his career; author Kurt Vonnegut was raised here; NFL quarterback Peyton Manning attended college nearby at Ball State University; singer Neil Diamond also grew up here; musician Joe Bonamassa spent time Principality Stadium playing football there as a player for Stonington High School before going on to play professionally with several bands including Black Flag and Sebadoh; and many more prominent people have made their homes or lives here such as Bob Hope who helped found Homecoming International Airport near downtown while still mayor of Elkhart Lake AFB until his death in 1997.; muni has produced so many Heisman Trophy winners that you can pretty much say anything about college football including Johnny Manziel who went from Notre Dame to Texas A&M then Oklahoma then San Diego State before finally heading back to Notre Dame again like most programs do these days but I digress In recent years Munciie has seen some growth with new development such as One Financial Place which opened up next door to City Hall late last year followed by Old National Bank Tower which will be completed this fall across from City Hall/Muncie Community College,. Additionally United Way is currently building an approximately $30 million dollar headquarters complex just south of I-465 west exit off US 421/US 68 near Monroeville Mall which will house their northern division as well as support services for low income families across six buildings totaling over 227 thousand square feet giving them plenty of space even when capacity may exceed 1 million individuals!

They named their home “The White House” after President John Quincy Adams. The first post office in Muncie was established in 1830. By 1840, the population of Muncie had reached over 1,000 people. The city became an incorporated municipality in 1852. In 1865, William Dawson opened a general store at Sixth Street and Market Place in what is now downtown Muncie. This started what would become one of Indianapolis' most successful businesses. Dawson's store continued to be open until it closed in 1922. In 1870, Abraham Lincoln Elementary School was founded here by Drs.. Atherton and Hendrickson with support from Mrs.. Lincoln. It remained open until it closed in 1961 due to lack of students and faculty space on campus at that time
