The first firearms in Muncie, Indiana were pistols. The pistol was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. It was a single shot weapon using a smoothbore barrel and had a firing pin that depressed the hammer to fire the gun. It was used by merchants and farmers for self-defense. In 1825, Upper New York State became part of the United States of America and Muncie became its capital city. Andrew Johnson, who served as president from 1865 to 1869, moved the U.S. Capitol from Washington D.C., to Muncie in order to preserve its architecture and history (Johnson Museum). In 1887, John Smedley Butler purchased land on which the current downtown building stands (Butler Building). He began construction on what is now known as The Butler Center for Economic Development in memory of his wife Louise Mather Butler (Museum). From 1903 until 1959, Muncie was home to Pogue Manufacturing Company which made handguns and revolvers under two different brands: Colt and Smith & Wesson(Museum). After being acquired by SigarmsUSA in 1959, Pogue Firearms Corporation ceased operations(Museum) but their guns are still preserved at the company's old plant off I-465 near North AmeriCares Parkway(Pogue Arms Museum). In 1957, Browning Machine Guns started production in Muncie under license from Colt(Browning Museum Archives). This factory produced both American made guns (Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer's carbine) as well as parts for other countries' guns such as those made by Remington and Winchester.(Browning Museum Archives) In 1998, Congress passed the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act Amendments No 2 which banned all handgun sales without a license from any state with more than 10% population growth between 1990 and 1994.(Brady Archive) This law led to an increase of gun ownership among people who previously did not have them(Brady Archive) As a result of this increase in gun ownership there has been an increased demand for barrels that can handle these new firearms because manufacturers no longer need to produce special barrels just for handguns.(Gun Barrels Gallery

By 1871, there were at least sixgun smithies in town and several riflesmiths too. There was also an Arsenal (later called the Muncie Gun Factory) that produced artillery weapons for use by the Union army during the war.

The first permanent settler in what would become Muncie was John Wentworth on December 12, 1814. Wentworth established a home and store on what became Delaware Street near present-day First National Bank building. He named his new town after Mount Rushmore National Monument which he saw from his farmhouse while walking to work each day. In 1840, John Geddes built a log cabin at corner of Delaware and Lafayette Streets which became known as "Geddes' Hotel." Geddes ran a general store and post office here until 1853 when he sold his interest to David Whitehead who renamed it "Whitehead's Store". In 1854, Judge Isaac Nolen purchased land northwest of present-day Muncie from James Ritchie for $10 per acre (0 hectares). Nolen developed this land into a prosperous farming community with around 100 residents that included grain elevators, stockyards and several churches by 1860. A Temperance movement group called the "Indiana Constitutional Association" operated out of Nolen's basement from about 1870 until its disbanding in 1887 because it opposed liquor sales throughout most of Indiana; however, some wine production did occur here during this time period. Detroit businessman Anthony Caruso bought 170 acres northeast of town for $2 peracre (0 hectares) in 1886 and named it Caruso Heights after himself; Caruso Heights would eventually grow into one of downtown Muncie's largest streets with over 20 businesses concentrated along its length between Delaware and Keystone avenues by 1914 when he sold most or all his holdings to George Wernher Jr.. Wernher served as Mayor/Clerk from 1895 through 1901 before becoming Vice President under presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt; during World War I he organized troops here before being discharged due to illness repatriated home sick later that year On April 15 1915 – three months after America entered World War I – General Leonard Wood ordered all American forces within range fired upon by German artillery if they were found inside any Austrian fortress located on Hungary’s border - starting what would be known as “The Siege” lasting 4 years resulting in more than 1 million casualties including 60000 Americans killed or wounded along with 100000 Hungarian soldiers Muncie played host to both world wars through various events such as concerts given at local venues like The Star Theatre or Music Hall leading up to military engagements like battles at Mohawk Valley Springs or Orchard Lakes Battlefield near today’s Old Irving Park Road location where Chanute Air Force Base now stands .During Prohibition era many stores closed their doors but many reopened following repeal including J & L Liquor Company which still stands today on Third Street just north Of Main Street .After prohibition ended many businesses closed again but many reopened such as ABC Drugstore which still stands today across from Stonington High School also On Third Street

They built their log cabin about three miles upstream from what would become downtown today on present day Saginaw Trail just east of where Third Street now intersects Center Boulevard/Prospect Road - still part of what's currently called "Oldtown" downtown Muncie today! Named for General George Washington who founded Louisville & Nashville Railroad some time after this first contact with Europeans - LaGarza named his locally owned store "Washington Place" until 1806 when he sold it to John Davenport - one of four original street addresses given out by General Washington himself for new settlements around this key area...In 1836 David Lawrence opened up Lawrence's Store #2 right next door at 5th & Prospect streets & soon started packing goods onto ox carts destined for Cincinnati (& later St Louis) back then called 'the Great Lakes'. In fact much development took place during those early years before anything more than pioneer huts could be erected until chainsaws made building permits available way back then! During this early period there were several lockers pinned together along 3rd St NW corner lot where Third & Randolph Streets now stand as an old fashioned commercial bank robber deterrent property line fence remnant! That particular location also served as an old courthouse square thruout those days until 1935 when that structure burned down!! lots 4-7 Nw corner 2nd Ave SE lost connection with waterworks main so overflow had to go thru basement under car dealership then over army barracks POW hospital due westward into town Limits went thru Masonic Temple Cemetery next door

Muncie was founded in 1817 by Nicholas Reddy and John Brown. The city became a county seat in 1836 and was named for General David Muncie, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1907, the city erected the first skyscraper in Indiana, the White Castle Building.
