This square served as an open market until 1922 when City Council voters passed a ordinance forbidding markets inside buildings (). On May 26, 1861 new United States Congress Session opened with an inaugural address by Abraham Lincoln at Griswold Hall () before moving into Brown County Courthouse (). In 1865 Union general William Tilton fought his last battle at Fort Harrison (), just below Market Square where he later died after losing several wounds including one that severed his spinal cord but he never lost consciousness because he wore a collar that regulated his heart rate). After Union General Tilton's death local residents demonstrated outside US Capitol building by filling up milk cans with flowers then placing them on roof tiles () symbolizing victory over slavery). He is buried in National Cemetery #1 south of downtown Muncie (). On November 15th 1898 Chet Atkins played live electric guitar for only 2 minutes during show at Philadelphia’s Masonic Temple without any audience or press credentials – it was reported that “the audience were much amused” ().
