Mooresville is a small town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Mooresville is part of the Indianapolis–Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Mooresville were three men who arrived on a wagon train from Illinois in 1814. They named their new home "Morse" after Samuel Morse, the inventor of the telegraph system. The town began as a stop on the stagecoach route between Fort Wayne and Terre Haute. In 1836, local resident James Waddell donated land to make way for a courthouse and jail; this building still stands today. In 1859, John Sargent founded the Jardine Rubber Company in Mooresville with two investors – his brother-in-law and cousin Elisha Barnes. The company manufactured rubber boots and shoes until it went bankrupt in 1912. In 1865, George Washington Morrison started a grocery store in Mooresville with his brother-in-law Elijah Couchman. The store became successful enough that Morrison bought out Couchman's share in 1870 and continued operation as an individual grocer until he sold it to Averill Harriman in 1902. On November 2, 1912, Fenton Moore died at age 73 when his airship “America’s First Plane” crashed into Lake Erie killing all aboard including himself; Moore had been looking forward to flying for pleasure that year and was piloting one of America’s first balloons over Cleveland when he lost control and crashed into the water near Mooresville Airport). When news of Moore’s death reached Mooresville residents they quickly erected a large memorial stone (6 feet by 3 feet) at Pittsburg Landing which still stands today next to Route 66 off US 36A south of town just east of mile marker 24 (the old alignment of US 36A).

The Mooresville community was founded in 1881 by John and Elizabeth Moores. The town name is a corruption of the word "Moring" which means "the place where pork is raised." The Mooresville post office was established in 1882, and the first store opened in 1884. In 1889, the Mooresville School District was formed and the first school building was built on Main Street. The population of Mooresville grew rapidly during the early years of this century and by 1920, it had reached over 1,000 people. During World War II, many Mooresville residents served in the military or were drafted into service. In 1951,Mooresville became a city when it annexed part of neighboring Defiance Heights.
