Mooresville is a town in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,816 at the 2010 census. The Mooresville Micropolitan Statistical Area includes all of Porter County. Moore established a grist mill on the banks of the White River in what is now Porter County. In 1824, James Hays founded what is now Hays University in Mooresville and moved his operations to the present-day town in 1827. In 1830, Wm. Purdy built a log cabin near the intersection of State Road 9 and Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard as headquarters for his new academy for education and learning which he called "Purdy's Academy". In 1847, General William Tipton built a stagecoach route from "the city" (now Indianapolis) to "Haysburg", then upriver to Fort Wayne and finally into Lawrenceburg where passengers could change horses at various stops before continuing on their way back home. This wagon road is still used today by general freight traffic between Evansville and Fort Wayne along SR 912/SR 1530 east of Mooresville

On July 15, 1814, a group of twenty-six men and boys set out from Moore'sville for what would be the first successful American attempt to cross the Isthmus of Corinth. The men were led by Captain John C. Ford, who had been captain of the ship "John Fitch" that had crossed in 1807. They successfully completed their crossing on July 17, but only four people returned home with them: one man died during the journey and three others became sick on the way back.
