In 1816, the village of Mooresville was founded by John and Esther Moore. The town was named for Esther's paternal grandfather, Samuel Moores. The Moore family had a home on the east side of the village and built a small mill there. In 1820, the town purchased land from the Vincennes Land Company for $100. The town grew rapidly and in 1830 it passed an ordinance establishing a school system with 10 students per room. In 1834, mooresville became an incorporated village with a government consisting of a mayor and five trustees. In 1840, Abraham Lincoln was elected to the United States Congress from Illinois and he came to Mooresville to campaign. When he arrived, many residents were so impressed with his policies that they decided to incorporation as well.
