The first store opened in Mooresville in 1846 and it operated under the name Indianola until 1865 when it changed its name to Moorestown and continued as such until 1978 when it merged with neighboring Village of Westfield to form Village of Mooresville-Westfield. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,952 people, 692 households, and 536 families residing in the town. The population density was 714.4 people per square mile (269.2/km²). In 1840, James Ladd donated land east of MOOREVILLE along State Road 535 for a new town called PLAINSVILLE which would be located next to Mooresville proper on high ground overlooking both rivers and Presque Isle Lake formed by dams built by the Illinois Central Railroad Company for its own benefit and distribution across much of central Indiana Territory including parts now known as Champaign County and Kankakee County. In 1853, MOOREVILLE became one of two towns in Buchanan County when it was organized from part of Crawford Township west of MOOREVILLE along with Terre Haute and Elkhart Townships west of that township. The other town was GARDNER which became an independent city in 1865 when portions of Butler Township were annexed into Gardner Township. In 1903, following research conducted by members of the Buchanan County Historical Society under direction of then-President Franklin D Roosevelt during World War I at White Sands Army Airfield north-central New Mexico where he had been stationed as an airman during World War I, President Roosevelt designatedMOOREVILLE as National Historic Landmark District No.: 8055479 due to its significant contributions theretoto American history: first being founded as a small agricultural community; second being one of only three communities in Buchanan County designated as such; third being home to Presque Isle Lake; fourth being site chosen for military installation during World War II; fifth being host township for post-World War II celebrations associated with that deployment; sixth through tenth having been major settlements adjacent thereto following Civilian Conservation Corps occupations beginning in 1926 followed by postwar growthSteve Jobs spent time developing Apple Incorporated here while working at Stanford Research Institute before becoming CEO/founder Apple Inc., headquartered here since 1976
Moresville was founded in 1824 by John C. Moore and his wife, Catherine Rucker. The town became a post office in 1828, and began to grow rapidly after it was designated as the county seat of Randolph County. In 1839, the Moore family donated land to the Town of Mooresville for a courthouse and jail. The first town meeting took place on November 12, 1840. In 1865, Mooresville became one of the original eight towns in Indiana Territory when that territory was created from parts of Randolph and Hendricks counties. The town continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1870 when it had a population of over 2,000 people. The first school building in Mooresville was built on what is now First Street in 1827. A second school building was built on Third Street in 1830-31; this building becoming known as the “Old Courthouse” later part of theMooresville United Methodist Church. On December 1, 1842, John C Moore died at home while still living in Mooresville with his wife Catherine and two children; one being age five years old at the time John died while Catherine played with her children nearby (John had been working odd jobs to support them). He is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery where his wife also lies buried along side their children Catherine (1821-1912) and George WashingtonMoore (1825-1910).
