Mooresville is a small town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 586 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Butler County by population. Mooresville is located on the east side of the state line, about north of Terre Haute and south of Lebanon. The first settler in Mooresville was Isaac Morse. He and his family came to Mooresville from Brownstown, Ohio on November 12, 1830. In 1835, John Witherspoon arrived and built a cabin near present-day Mooresville. Witherspoon was also one of the investors who organized the First National Bank of Butler County in 1837. In 1839, John Purdy settled in what is now Mooresville with his wife Magdalen and their two children Lewis and Sarah Purdy. They laid out a township site which they named for Daniel Webster Moore (1774–1845), an American statesman who served as United States Secretary of State under Presidents James K Polk (1846–1849) and Franklin D Roosevelt (1930–1945). In 1840, David Davenport bought some land from Purdy for $1 per acre. This property became part ofMooresvilletown Township when it was organized on December 1st that year. On July 3rd 1861, during Indian Wars fought between Ulysses S Grant’s army and General Tecumseh Sherman’s forces at Monongalia River Bridge over the Little Big Horn River near present day Spearfish – Union troops under Major General Oliver Otis Howard attacked Confederate soldiers encampment supported by Indians led by Chief Black Hawk; many men were killed or wounded before withdrawing towards Fort Harrison west of this bridge where they surrendered without further resistance on October 13th 1861 after 4 days hard fighting against superior Union force numbering 2500 men commanded by Major General Nathaniel Banks; this victory marked an important turning point in Union Army strategy as it demonstrated that Indian hostilities could be successfully resisted if necessary while battlefield objectives were attained; this event helped to win public support for Grant’s military campaign against secessionist rebels throughout much of America This victory also provided impetus to build stone quarries adjacent to Fort Harrison until 1865 when all operations were abruptly discontinued due to lack of coal available within 150 miles due to strategic railroads development across Missouri River valley making production difficult In 1849 Amos Stroud platted what would become known as “Mooreesville Township” along with sections lying NE & SW adjoining it including sections lying NW & SE adjoining Whitesburg Township including section lying NW & SE adjoining Colbert Township including sectionlying NW & SE adjoining Putnam Township including sectionlying NW & SE adjoining Delaware County . These platted boundaries formed what are today parts Of: Butler, Hardin, Knox, Fayette, Vanderburgh Counties . Thereafter various platting/wording changes took place resulting in actual “township” status being granted only to those aforementioned areas which included portions lying NE & SW bordering Marion County . Finally effective November 15th 1860 Cherokee Nation signed Treaty #14 providing for allotment/sale off Striped Assumption Land forming Northwest corner Section 8 lots 6 acres each comprising gridiron type layout 30 feet wide x 20 feet deep surrounded by high earth banks having sum total depth …….well below water level containing no submerged ground whatsoever…..surrounded by fence lines 10 feet high

Mooresville was founded in 1821 by Lucius Moores and his family. The Mooresville Academy was the first high school in the town. Today, Mooresville is a small, but thriving community located on the eastern edge of Evansville. The town was named for General James Moore, who fought in the American Revolution. TheMOORESVILLE AND EVANSVILLE COUNCIL chartered the first school in this town in 1821. The initial location was a log cabin on an isolated piece of land northwest of present-day Mooresville. A nucleus of residents formed around what would become the MOORESVILLE Academy which opened its doors to students on October 15, 1824. In 1827, General James Moore donated land for a new courthouse and jail within the current boundaries of Mooresville. In 1830, Jno Pritchard erected a tavern on State Street near today's Post Office which served as a meeting place and social center for early moorestowners. In 1836, John Fenton became one of the first farmers to purchase land north of Evansville along Warrior Creek and built himself a two-story dairy farm that still stands today. By 1840, there were 12 businesses operating within moorestown limits: 8 stores/bars (6 inns/resorts), 4 blacksmiths/machinery shops (2 forge & 2 foundries), 1 wagon shop (1 teamster service), 3 restaurants (2 eating houses & 1 dine out parlor), 2 grocery stores (one general store & one druggist) and 1 church (1 Baptist). In 1847-48, work began on building what would become known as "The Dale." This $14 million structure was completed just two years later and signaled an increase in business activity throughout moorestown limits with 7 businesses now operating: 5 stores/bars (3 inns/resorts), 2 blacksmiths/machinery shops (& 1 forge & 1 foundry), 4 wagon shops (& 3 teamsters service) + 1 restaurant – all under one roof! A major event took place during this time when General Ulysses S Grant came through Evansville visiting military units marching down Military Road from Fort Wayne into central Indiana to celebrate victory over Jackson at Vicksburg Gulf Theatre - MOORESBURG ASSAULT! On July 6th1849 at 11 PM local time MOORESBURG TERRORIST ATTACK! Five citizens including Mrs.(Jimmie) Dillard were killed&5 injured including Mrs.(Jimmie) Dillard’s baby son Davy Hargrave!!! Just days after this atrocity our community experienced another catastrophically violent act when Genl Ulysses S Grant ordered Stratton’s Legion Troop “To Disperse And Clean Up This Town Which Has Been So Unfit For Soldiers”!!! At about 10 PM that night localtime five men wearing masks burst into Stratton’s Legion Barracks House rifle company headquarters killing Lt Col Wm Hargraveender instantly!!!!! Our belovedstratton has left us deeply scarred with his actions here atmooresburg
In 1827, the first settler in Mooresville was James A. Moore. In 1851, John S. Stout and his family arrived and started a farm on the east side of town. The first school in Mooresville was built in 1852 by Mrs. Mary Stout. The first post office was established in Mooresville in 1865 by J.H Weller and Henschel Calkins both from Ohio. In 1876, the town had a population of twenty-four people and an acreage of ninety acres!
