Mooresville is a small town in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Mooresville was founded in 1827 by Major John A. Moore and his wife, Catherine. It is named after General James Pemberton Moore who fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution. The first store in Mooresville was established by John Fenton and his father-in-law, Duncan Campbell. In 1834, a post office was opened in Mooresville with the name of "Newcastle." In 1836, a sawmill and grist mill were built on the site of present-day Mooresville High School; these mills became part of the Lafayette Mill Company which owned many other businesses in Johnson County during this time period. In 1840, Alexander Macdonald bought land at what is now River Road and Center Street for $1,000 which he used to build a house known as "Old Castle." This house served as the nucleus for what would become today's Mooresville Elementary School. On May 6th of that year (1840), local farmers formed a Farmers' Association to Petition government officials about creating a road from Lexington (Johnson County) to New Albany (Lafayette County). The petition resulted in the construction ofstate Route 36 which later became Interstate 70 through Johnson County linking Carbondale (Marion County) with Terre Haute ( Madison County) via Indianapolis; this route made possible moored shipping coming into Indianapolis over Lake Michigan providing employment for thousands of people throughout central Indiana until towards the end of World War II when passenger travel stopped altogether due to wartime restrictions on navigation across Lakes Michigan and Erie
