Mishawaka is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 5,567 at the 2010 census. Mishawaka is part of the Indianapolis–Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mishawaka was founded by the Pemberton family in 1828. The Townsite Act of 1833 designated Mishawaka as the seat of government for all rural areas east of Lake Michigan, and it grew rapidly becoming one of the leading towns in that region. In 1836, Mishawaka's first post office opened and became one of the largest in Indiana. Mishawaka was named after David Mishawka, an early settler who had purchased land from the Pembertons. A Temperance movement began to grow in Mishawaka during this time and by 1840 it had become one of the most prohibition-friendly communities in Indiana; two years later, however, liquor sales were restricted to residents over 21 years old. One major event that took place during these years was when John Fetterman became mayor on December 12th, 1840 and banned all beer sales throughout much of central Indiana; this led to some tension between Fetterman's pro-liquor stance and those who wanted to keep their traditions alive within the community (the primary trade centers being taverns). In 1851 Mishawaka annexed neighboring town Byronburg which then had a population of 1,600 people but closed its doors due to lack of business opportunities; nevertheless, Byronburg remains an important memory from those earlier times because many items used in local manufacturing such as saddles and boots were made there before moving onto other parts of America. In 1896 another annexation occurred when Crawfordsville merged with Nishawa; Crawfordsville retained its name while Nishawa lost its suffix (thus becoming Nishawa–Mishawaka). Mishawaka, Indiana is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 2,851 at the 2010 census. Mishawaka was founded by James Kapp and his family in 1827 as a trading post on the White River near what is now Fort Wayne, Indiana. The area that became Mishawaka was laid out as part of an Indian Treaty negotiated between the government of France and the Potawatomi Nation in 1795. The first settler in Mishawaka was John Blythe who arrived in 1827 and built a log cabin on the banks of White River. In 1838, David Dudley started a gristmill on Black Creek which soon became one of India's largest flour mills and also produced cheese, eggs, bacon, butter, and other agricultural products for local residents and travelers alike. In 1845, James Kapp founded Mishawaka Station with his brother Solomon Kapp to offer wagonloads of goods to settlers moving westward from Vincennes via what is now Stroudsburg County Fairgrounds and then north through central Indiana Territory to Chicago where they were unloaded at Hulls Landing on Lake Michigan before being transported east again via steamboat over Perrysburg Bridge across the Big Four Rivers into Illinois. A new courthouse was built in downtown Mishawaka in 1870 by order of President Abraham Lincoln following plans created by General Harrison Bourke with assistance fromIndiana congressman George Rogers Clark. The building still stands today adjacent to Mishawaka High School along Main Street – one block east of its original location where it served as a court house until 1964 when it was moved south across Main Street to become what is now First Baptist Church (later First United Methodist). Railroad traffic increased during Prohibition which led to increased production at various businesses including David Dudley's mill which turned out more than 1 million barrels of oil per year until 1942 when prohibition ended; however, many businesses failed due to competition from large interstate breweries such as Anheuser-Busch InBev which had opened up throughout North America since Prohibition began.
