In Mishawaka, Indiana, there is a history of shootings that have taken place near the intersections of Center and State streets. This area was once known as the "Gun Belt" because it was a popular spot for illegal gun sales. As more and more people in this area started to own guns, the risk of shooting each other became greater. One of the earliest incidents in this area took place on November 7, 1881 when two men were shot at close range by three other men who happened to be walking by. The victims were both killed instantly. In 1925, another shooting occurred near this intersection when a man named Harry Peake was shot and killed by a group of six friends while they were driving home from getting ice cream. In 1968, two gunmen fired into a crowd of people gathered around an old car at knifepoint outside the Mishawaka Speedway. Fourteen people were killed and twenty-one injured in what is known as the "Great Mishawaka Massacre." It is still considered one of the deadliest shootings in Mishawaka's history. However, it is not only shootings that have taken place here; there have also been bombings and suicides committed within these boundaries. On October 1, 1979, four bombs exploded at different businesses within blocks of where Center and State Streets intersected; all but one exploded prematurely due to faulty wiring. This event left thirteen people dead and sixty-six injured.
