From 1886 to 1888, Mishawaku's first Baptist church was built and operated as a meeting place for religious denominations which included Methodist Episcopalians (later known as Methodists), Baptists, Congregationalists and Presbyterians. In 1909, Mishawaka became an incorporated town under the name "Mishawaka". At that time it had a population of 2,827 people and had four stores: The Masonic Emporium Store; The Standard Oil Company Store; The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Store; And Agrarian Supply store open for three years only vernacular schools began operating inside of town limits during this time periodKirkwood Public School (grades 1-12) opened its doors on October 26th 1912 while Shadyside Consolidated School (grades 7-12) opened on November 3rd 1912 with Mrs Florence Shadyside serving as superintendent for both schools until her retirement effective January 1st 1935 . On December 15th 1913 Rev Gertrude Moesen moved into her new home at 619 Main Street after purchasing property from Mrs Bessie Sprague who graciously donated land for the purpose . On February 12th 1914 flowers went up around McClain’s Drugstore where Marilla McDonald started working when she became employed full time at $5/day She continued to work until her death on May 4th 1966 which left behind an entire family including husbands Fred (a doctor), Bob (an accountant)and James “Jame” McClain Jr.. Today you can still see some evidence that she worked here long before her death such as small pieces of glass found near where she used to stand
