Mishawaka is an unincorporated community in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Mishawaka is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area and is served by the Mishawaka-Hamilton Township School District. Mishawaka was laid out in 1823 by Caleb Mishawaka, a native of Canada who came to America as a student at Indiana University. He named his settlement after his brother-in-law, David Mishawaka, then a member of the Indiana General Assembly. David had come to America in 1799 with his family from Scotland and settled in what is now Lebanon Heights on the banks of the White River. In 1824, Caleb's wife Margaret died Childless (she had married John Cummins two years earlier). She bequeathed her land to her nephew Amos Chase for himself and his heirs male or female failing which he would have received it "in perpetuity." The community grew quickly; by 1830 it included six dwellings and thirty acres (twenty hectares) of land grantee's personal landholdings plus twenty more acres (ten hectares) donated by Amos' widow Leah Chase. In 1834, when Methuen and Randolph Counties were organized into Hancock County, Mishawaka became one of its first settlements. At that time there were only three houses in town: The Mechanics' Institute (now part of nearby Hamilton Township), Mrs. Pritchard's house on Third Street across from where present day Old Fort Pondourian Drive meets State Road 528/Eugene Street, and Mr. Kappler's home on High Street east of Main Street near today's intersection with State Road 135/Market Streets North & South respectively; all three properties were built before 1840 when Mishawaka began to grow rapidly due to trade with neighboring counties for goods brought overland via stagecoach routes linking Cincinnati & Indianapolis through Kentucky & West Virginiavia Pittsburgh en route to Chicago (& St Louis). . . .
