Mishawaka is a small town in southern Indiana. The population was 5,817 at the 2010 census. Mishawaka is best known for its Mishawaka Manufacturing Company, which produces cigarettes and other tobacco products. The company was founded in 1894 by George Mishawaka and his brother Samuel Mishawaka. The two brothers were born in what is now downtown Mishawaka. In 1906, the family moved to what is now the east side of town and started producing cigars. In 1911, they produced cigarettes and in 1912, they produced cigars under the name "Mishawaka-Kentucky." In 1922, they became the first company to sell cigarrettes over the counter in India.[1] The company ceased production in 1984 but continued sales through online channels until 1998 when it merged with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation. Today, it is still headquartered on Main Street in Mishawaka and employs about 350 people.[2]

The city has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa), typical of most of north central Indiana. The first settler in Mishawaka was Jordon Hunt who arrived from Illinois in 1824 with his family. He built a log cabin on the banks of the White River near present-day North Bend Township while he awaited news of his father's death back home in Illinois. Hunt served as postmaster for both Fort Dearborn and Mishawaka until 1830 when he resigned to take up farming east of the White River. John Wills also settled here around this time before moving to Terre Haute,Indiana soon after becoming state senator from that area In 1831 Wills married Eliza Burchill and they moved to Terre Haute where she started an academy which still exists today known as Indiana State University - Mishawaka Campus (ISU-Mishawaka). In 1834 William Haggerty set out from Fort Dearborn with 4 oxen, 20 bushels of corn, 1 wagonload of potatoes, 2 barrelsful of oil shale oil, 5 hogsheads whiskey & 100 sacks flour landed at Mounds Bayou about 8 miles southwest (now Eads Creek)of modern day Mishawa
