Michigan City, Indiana (population: 8,906) is a city in and the county seat of Porter County, Indiana. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Michigan City was made by French traders in 1795. The town was named for Jean-Baptiste de la Salle, captain of the ship "Natchez", which arrived there with supplies from France in 1796. The first post office was established in 1800; it was called de Vincennes. In 1805, Michigan City became a state capital; it replaced Fort Wayne as the state's temporary capital until Indianapolis could be built. In 1836, Illinoisan James Kapp organized a group of fur trappers and stagecoach robbers known as the "Michigan Land Rush" who traveled through Porter County looking for new land to settle. Some of these settlers founded what are now neighboring towns such as Mishawaka (now Freeport), La Grange (now Lindsley), and Terre Haute (now Terre Haute). By 1840, most of present-day Porter County had been settled when John Crampton erected a small fort on his farm around this time to protect himself and his settlers from attack by Native Americans living near Indian Creek Falls upstream from today's downtown Michigan City. In 1849, Michigan City became one of three states admitted to the Union after ratifying an act calling for that result by Congress under President George Washington It quickly emerged as an important transportation hub due to its location at both Western and Eastern Railroad tracks running through its territory. Commerce grew rapidly throughout the 1850s thanks to entrepreneurs like J W Marriott who constructed hotels and other buildings downtown while also investing in businesses across multiple sectors including lumbering/mining/manufacturing etc., which continue up until present day In 1871 – just two years after becoming an incorporated city – Mayor A H Cline proclaimed that “Michigan City has become one of those places where progress meets community service” Cline believed that civic virtue would lead people towards economic success and hesponsored numerous social programs designed to promote thriftiness among citizens such as providing free groceries at local stores on Saturday mornings; encouraging manual labor within businesses during slack times; establish public schools for children aged 6–12 years old free or at cost with no tuition allowed; create fire departments throughout all areas depending on availability however only one engine could be used per departmental response area maximum 5 engines were ever needed during any given period not including wartime periods ; provide home improvement services such as painting & repairs additionally lawn care etc.; establish libraries throughout every ward while also sponsoring lectures & symposiums on various topics each year

In 1926, Michigan City merged with neighboring townships to form what is today known as Huron Township. The merger was considered by some because it would give more land to each township while others felt that Huron Township had too much autonomy and did not contribute enough money or services to Michigan City during their time as part of the township. Regardless of itsorigins, MichiganCity has come to be one of the most important cities in central Indiana with a rich history that can be enjoyed today thanks largely to its many attractions such as art galleries, museums, shopping centers, parks and nightlife options.
