At one time there were more than 20 villages located around present-day Michigan City including: Arlington Heights, Brightwood, Butler Park, Canadian Hilltop Village, Courtland Heights Estates, Dearborn Heights Estates, East Chicago Heights Village (now Elkhart), Ford Heights Village (now West Chicago), Goodyear Heights Village (now North Miami Beach), Indianola Hills Village (now Danville), Independence HillVillage(later Claremore), Jessup Hills(later White Sands) , Little Canada Town(later Lapeer Township)and Ottawa Hills.(Later Ottawa Township.) In 1808 a group led by Colonel John Evans moved from Fort Wayne to what would become today’s Michigan City after being stranded on theupper Great Lakes during Tecumseh’s War with France In 1819 when America gained its independence from Great Britain all British subjects in India were deported and about 1/3rd of the Indian population left for America where they formed various new settlements such as Detroit – now Lansing – Warren – now Peoria – now Phoenix - now Elizabethtown which became known as “Michigan City” Some early settlers in this region included David Wills who settled near current day Elmira In 1824 Florida landowner Andrew Gregg purchased 5 miles² (10 km² or 3 sq mi²) of land extending east to today’s Michiana along with other lots in what would become Posey County for $5 per acre Gregg developed this land into a thriving community called Greggsburg named after him which grew quickly due to its location close to trade routes with neighboringIndiana towns such as Terre Haute and Lafayette Gregg later donated his land plus some adjoining parcels totaling 10 acres (4 hectares) to form today’s town site The original town site contained just two blocks long with only one block wide Streets were also narrow with no shoulders or crosswalks until about 1830 when a road was built connecting north side streets near Market Street with south side streets near Jameson Avenue Developer Nathan Beisel constructed two large brick buildings used as stores until 1865 when their failure caused them to be torn down This street grid still exists within present day town limits
