In 1881, the first enlargement of the Michigan City post office was completed. The new building had two rooms and cost $2,500. The enlarged post office began operations on November 3, 1881. In 1933, an addition to the Michigan City post office was built for $5,000. It housed four rooms and cost $25,000. On January 1, 1937, the corner of Washington Street and Seventh Avenue in Michigan City became a separate post office from the original Michigan City post office due to its importance as a transportation hub in the area. On July 1, 1974, an expansion to the current five-building complex at Seventh Avenue and Washington Street was completed for $27 million. It included a new Post Office Annex with six stories that cost an additional $22 million. The annex is now known as the governor’s residence. On October 15th of this year (2018), it was announced that Michigan City will be losing its main mail service provider due to lack of funding from Congress through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This means that large letters will have to be sent by other methods such as FedEx or USPS
Michigan City, Indiana is a small town located in the state of Indiana. The population was 5,239 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County and the largest city in Wayne County by population. Michigan City is also the economic center for much of Wayne County. The first people to settle in what is now Michigan City were Native Americans who hunted, fished and gathered plants and animals along the banks of the Muskegon River. They built their homes on high ground overlooking the river. By 1800, there were about 100 settlers living in what is now Michigan City. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne moved his army from Fort Dearborn to invade Canada during the War of 1812. He needed supplies and saw that Detroit was too weak to resist an attack. He ordered his army to march through Michigan City on their way to Toronto. The citizens of Michigan City collected food for the troops while they marched through town and sale goods they created closer to where they would be deployed later that day or these days known as "The Battlefields." In 1815, General Wayne founded what are now called The University of Notre Dame and The Military Academy at West Pointgraduate School (now West Point) in nearby Mishawaka with some land he had acquired from Canada near present-day downtown Lansingburgh Falls as part of his Campaign against Ottawa during Black Hawk War #2 costing him dear including $10,000 dollars worth of cannons captured from them which he used at The Battle Of Saybrook Heights which resulted in a decisive victory for United States over British forces under Major John Armstrong (the future George Washington). With this victory came increased military importance for Michigan City resulting in its growth as an important crossroad on US East Side with many new mercantile businesses opening up throughout its years leading up until it became an incorporated city Limits date back to 1872 when it annexed unincorporated parts inside today’s east side limits dating back even further back including one early settler’s cabin less than two miles from current day downtown Lansingburgh Falls still standing today next door tosite where we worship our Lord Jesus Christ daily!
