The park is located on State Street just north of I-64/I-95 exit 7A outside of downtown Michigan City. The history of this small community can be traced back more than 350 years ago when Potawatomi Indians arrived in what is now central Indiana from their original lands along Lake Superior shores northwestward into Canada’s Upper Peninsula.. The tribe constructed their first permanent village on what is now known as Muskegon Heights Road in 1809 while they were still living among hunting grounds provided by Chief Tecumseh’s Treaty party with Great Britain.. From here they began trading with other tribes through vessels anchored offshore or landing on shore before continuing inland where relations grew increasingly close until warfare erupted between British forces led by Admiral Sir George Thompson during Pontiac’s Rebellion (1815) .. Aftermath left many elderly Potawatomi residents stranded on land above water where they slowly died from exposure or starvation .. With no way back available except through trade with surrounding tribes or dangerous ocean crossings entsrepreneurs mustered up courage enough to build homes feet below water using logs fashioned into piles about 20 feet high . these dwellings would provide cover from raiding parties while farmers cultivated crops inside early day pioneers did not encounter any kind of natural disasters such as floods or freezes like those experienced later when civilization leapfrogged over nature seeking access to reliable transportation Today we enjoy beautiful views down Muskegon River Delta towards Chicago skyline then across Elkhart Lake towards White Rapids National Monument
