Michigan City, Indiana is a small city in the western third of the state of Indiana. It is bordered by Knox County to the north, Westfield County to the east, and Dearborn County to the south. The population was 5,651 at the 2010 census. Michigan City is known for its history and culture which has been influenced by its location on the Sandusky River. The first Europeans to arrive in this area were French traders who traveled upriver from what is now Canada in 1689-1690. They named their new town after Louis XIV's brother, King Louis de France (the Sun King). When French explorer Francois Vauquelin discovered river sandbars and rich bottomlands along the river in 1769 he decided to settle here permanently. He named his settlement Cadillac because of his height above water at that time (Cadillac was about 6 feet tall). The town began growing rapidly thanks to newcomers coming downriver: farmers, men working for furriers and lumber companies, mechanics from Detroit who built railroads through this area, as well as women Pioneers such as Elizabeth Donelson who built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1814. In 1835 a group of settlers led by Isaac Goodale purchased land near Cadillac and founded what became known as Goodale Township. In 1836 two groups of settlers each acquired 640 acres (2 km²) within present-day Clinton Township when they bought land from David Blacksmithsalong with other pioneer families including those of Solomon Northrup and John Potter; these purchases formed part of what would later become Clinton Township proper. That year also saw another significant event when General Jackson gave approval for construction along Sandusky River of a ferry service connecting Michigan City with Highland Park on Lake Erie Among those directly involved in these early days are George Rogers Clark whose home still stands on South Main Street within current day Clinton Township - just across from where today's State House used to stand -and Simon Cameron who served as President James Kieft's secretary during Indian Removal hearings held here in 1840-1841 Among others related significantly through connection or association with one or more aspects of early Michigan City include: Elijah Clarke (later an admiral), Hiram Chafee (a general during America's War with Great Britain), Augustus Kelley (founder father-in-law of Abraham Lincoln), Asa Hutchinson (a UPI photographer), Jacob Weitzel (founder headmaster/teacher at Galesburg Academy) and Basil Waddell(president pro tempore United States Senate). After years spent developing various businesses including cigar manufacturing facilities adjacent to Masonic Lodge No 822 located on South Main Street between Jefferson Avenue opposite First National Bank building before it burneddown in 1895; post office operator Leland Stanford Jr.'s familyowned California Gold Rush era mining camp situated 12 miles west along Cuyahoga River called Graniteville until it closed operations due largely to a combinationof overproduction & disease; Ford Motor Company president Henry Ford moved his production operations out here following World War I & instituted "Fordism" which called for increased efficiency & productivity throughout company (& especially at Rouge Plant); among many more notable local residents associated with early Michigan City include Drury Wellcome Coopersmith brothers Coolidge Glass Works founders Alfred Sloan ('photosynthesis' principle Candle manufacture developed)) Morley Winters ('father' founder Ohio Penitentiary) Roy Wilkins ('steelworker' coke producer)+ numerous prostitutes who resided primarily around Market Square until legislation legalizing prostitution severely curtailed their activities following prohibition decree passed by then governor Frank Norris; contemporary columnist Jay Leno moved back home after serving three terms representing Cleveland suburbsterrorist Timothy McVeigh while living several blocks away from downtown+umerous other noteworthy luminaries associated withe tiny community priorto its sudden 2006 closureby local developers subjecting itto popular ridicule concurrentwith increasing gentrification initiatives nearby
