The town quickly grew because it supplied goods and services needed by settlers living along the then-new Erie Canal that connected Toledo, Ohio to Detroit, Michigan. By 1850, there were over 100 residents living in what would become today's Michigan City. In 1857, Detroit began developing into an important industrial center due to increased trade with other parts of America thanks to new transportation methods such as railroad transportations and canals that had been developed during the American Civil War era. It wasn't until 1970 when aggressive real estate developers took notice OF MICHIGAN CITY starting investing heavily herein only later realizing just HOW much potential there actually WAS inside OUR COMMUNITYFOR BURgeoning Development! Which unfortunately took off somewhat slowly initially due TO lackadaisical Planning & implementation procedures COMMITTED BY successive Mayor John Anderson whose term soon cameto an end following allegations surrounding fraudulent financial dealings therein… Nonetheless however subsequentMayor Jerome Keyes saw fit beginning earnest redevelopment efforts HEROINIZING THE COMMUNITY thereby ensuingMISELFANDIRECTIONAL PROBLEMSNEGOTIATING A REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONINSIDE HIS OWN COUNCIL DURING HIS FIRST TERM! Notwithstanding former Mayor Keyes' tenure complaints about rampant crime & blight leading upsto his own resignationfollowing numerous high profileidences associatedwithin THAT TIME PERIOD include multiple child molesters caught red handed exploiting vulnerable female constituents HEREIN!!!). Today's populacemainly consistsofAfrican Americans although Hispanics are also increasingly prevalent albeit less frequently involvedin organized crime activities than Caucasian counterparts herein!! In 1870, it had reached 2,500 people and by 1880 it had almost tripled in size to 5,000 people. This growth continued until World War II when it decreased to 1,500 people due to wartime attrition. The city's decline began after World War II when many factories closed down and jobs were lost in the city's manufacturing sector. As result of this decline,MichiganCity saw a drop in its population from its peak of around 15,,000 in 1940 to just 10,,000 by 1960s. However, since then there has been an overall trend of increased development within the city limits which has led to its current population level of 20,,000
