During Prohibition era (1925-1932), Michiganders drank heavily from riverboats moored upstream from town limits while consuming bootleg liquor smuggled into Canada by boatloads from other states In 1933, Henry Ford opened his first auto dealership here and began selling cars direct to consumers rather than through dealerships In 1935, startup company Saginaw Automotive Manufacturing Company moved here from Flint to become one of the early major manufacturers in this area The post office was established at Michigan City on December 8, 1881 In 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and resultant war forced many Americans living near Detroit to leave their homes; some 4500 people made new homes within 2 miles (3 km) of central city in what is today known as "the Great Migration". By 1945 only about 350 residents remained in central city compared to 6500 persons who had lived there before Pearl Harbor 1/7th of all jobs created between 1940-1945 were related directly or indirectly to wartime production

Michigan City, Indiana is an unincorporated community in Daviess County, Indiana, United States. The community was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1816. It was named for the town of Michigan on the Ottawa River. The first settler in Michigan City was John Sneath who arrived in 1816. His home is still standing and is a historical landmark. Another early settler was Nicholas Rankin who arrived in 1818. He built a cabin on the banks of the White River. The community developed quickly and soon had a small school, post office, and store. In 1825, a group of fur traders from Detroit established what would become known as the Chicago Board of Trade at what is now Michigan City Park. This saw rapid growth for the town as traders came to trade with local tribes and settlers began arriving to purchase land and build homes. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Michigan City. During the Mexican–American War (1846–48), American forces invaded Mexico and Occupied Michoacán Province including Michoacán City which became one of many towns captured by General Zachary Taylor's army during his march through Mexico into Texas on October 15th, 1846 Kansas Territory was created on November 2nd when President James Kossuth made proclamation declaring that all Native Americans east of Missouri must leave within 72 hours or be driven out by force if necessary On December 5th Ulysses S Grant ordered Major General George Crook to enter Indian Territory without any provocation In March 1865 Union troops burned down most of downtown Michoacán after invading it while searching for Confederates under General David Hunter who had surrendered at Granada Hills near here three days earlier After Mexican president Vicente Fox relieved General Pancho Villa from power following his resignation on July 20th 1865 Macomb County was organized with its current boundaries set by Act No . 827 approved September 16th 1865 . Withdrawal from US military occupation completed eleven months later on November 9th when last remaining Confederate forces surrendered at Palo Alto Creek near here becoming American territory once again
Michigan City, Indiana was founded in 1824 by General Lewis Cass. The city was named after Michigan Territory, which had been organized in 1795. The first post office was established in the city on February 7, 1825. Michigan City became a town in 1856 and a village in 1912. It was corporately incorporated as a city on January 1, 1916.
