Michigan City was a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and is now a part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. It was founded in 1824 by General James K. Polk as an agricultural village on the east bank of the White River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of present-day Indianapolis. By 1854, Michigan City had become an important shipping and transportation center for northwestern Indiana through its role as a outlet for raw materials from other states and as a hub for wagon traffic between Chicago and points north. Its location made it vulnerable to attack by local Native American tribes, so commerce grew increasingly based on trade with Canada instead. I n 1875, James Haggerty erected what is now called Haggerty House on Main Street as his home while he served as Mayor of Michigan City with voting rights until 1889 when he resigned to become Mayor of Terre Haute following its incorporation into Indianapolis as an incorporated city limits community seat under that name in 1896 In 1902, Captain Sidney Ayerfield purchased 375 acres (16 ha) adjacent to present-day downtown Lansingburgh for use as a parkland which remains today within boundaries of both cities after being annexed by each other in 1907
