Merrillville is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kokomo, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. Merrillville was founded by George Merrill and his brother-in-law, John Pritchett. The first store in Merrillville was built on the site of present day downtown Merrillville. The original post office in Merrillville was established on October 15, 1881. The village of Merrillville grew up around the local agricultural industry and commerce that flourished during the early years of this century. Development began when two brothers – George and John Merrill – bought land east of present day downtown from their father-in-law for $1 per acre (2 acres = $10). They donated most of their holdings to create a town which they named after themselves: George Merton Village became Merrillville on December 12, 1901. In what is now known as “The Golden Age” of commercial development in Kokomo County there were many small businesses dotting the landscape near where today’s streets run southward towards I-69 and US 31A. These included stores such as Mr. Kube’s Hardware Store (now closed), Wellman’s Drug Store & Feed Emporium (closed 1924), Mrs Henson’s Bakery (closed 1912), Wertheimer Bros Chevrolet dealership/service station/grain elevator (closed 1984) and JONES Lumber Co./Lumberyard Equipment store/laboratory (closed 1978). Many residents still reside within these buildings today! With an average production floor size of only 10 feet wide by 25 feet long it would have been difficult for any one business to operate an entire grain Elevator chain or even carry out several specialist trades simultaneously because these types assets were typically leased rather than sold outright like they are today! Today we can enjoy a sampling from each business operated back then including; Mr Kube's Hardware Store ('93 building torn down), Wellman's Drug Store & Feed Emporium ('93 building also torn down) Mrs Henson's Bakery ('92 building still standing) Wertheimer Bros Chevrolet dealership/service station (& Grain Elevator '84 structure remains) JONES Lumber Co./Lumberyard Equipment store (& Laborers' Shop '78 building also extant )! All told there must have been at least 20 different businesses operating here during those halcyon days!
Merrillville was founded in 1848 by James Merrill and his brother, Isaac Merrill. The city was named for the two brothers and their father, Job Merrill. In 1870, the city had a population of just over 100 people. By 1900, the population had grown to more than 700 people. The city's growth continued through the years, and by 1920 it had reached 1,500 people. By 1970, Merrillville had become one of the most populous cities in Indiana.
