There has been a shooter eye protection history in Merrillville, Indiana for over sixty years. The first shooting deaths in the city were reported on October 7, 1886 when Wm. Fowler shot and killed Charles Barnes. From then until the early 1920s, no other shootings took place within the city limits. However, during that time period there were several high-profile cases of people being killed by gunmen who had mistaken them for targets. These include the murders of two ministers in 1915 and 1916, as well as the death of Harry Lange in 1922 from a gunshot to his head after he left work at a grocery store. In 1949, however, an incident occurred which led to increased gun violence within Merrillville. A group of men wearing masks forced their way into a home and began shooting at occupants before leaving with several firearms. One victim was shot multiple times and died soon afterwards. This event is considered to be one of the worst handgun crimes in city history.

Several large businesses are located in downtown: Wright-Patterson Air Force Base headquarters (formerly known as Bradley Research Laboratories), Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's department store, Bankers Trust Company, and Purdue University's largest basketball arena (the Purple Heart Arena).Many of Merrillville's major streets were named for prominent citizens or local landmarks: Main Street (now I-465), South Park Avenue (now US-131), West Side Highway (now I-69/US 31), North Side Highway (now I-465)

By 1915, shotguns had become widely used and handguns had replaced rifles as the main form of firearms usage. As pistols started becoming more prevalent, handgun owners began using shooting glasses as part of their firearm protection routine. In 1927, The NRA created a standard for handgun safety goggles which is still in use today
