Merrillville is a small town in Mylar Township, LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muncie–Fremont metropolitan area. Merrillville was founded as a log town in 1826 by Englishman John Merrill and his family. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the fringe of what would becomeIndian Territory, and it became a popular destination for farmers and others looking for an isolated community with few temptations to get away from civilization. In 1838, Merrillville incorporated as a city under the name of "Merrillville." By 1850, however, the city's growth had slowed due to concerns about water availability and other development problems within its boundaries. In 1861, Merrillville incorporated as a village under the name of "MerrillVILLE." The village rapid growth continued through the 1870s and 1880s due to new construction projects such as an express train station (opened in 1881) and a millinery district (established in 1885). At times during this time period there were up to 100 people living in Merrillville at one time. Despite these successes,village administrators began to face pressure from more organized communities throughout LaPorte County over land usage decisions and lack of financial resources; by 1890 they had disbanded their organization entirely. In 1898 much effort was made by City Manager Wm Halsey to revive Village government after it had lapsed several years earlier; however he could not keep Village alive past 1900 because of growing competition from larger towns within LaPorte County. By 1910 Village officials estimated that only 6-8% of residents lived inside Village limits while nearly all residents worked outside or commuting into Muncie or Indianapolis. During World War II much activity took place within Merrillville including many manufacturing plants used for war production such as munitions factories operated by V-2 rocket company (#4), airplane engine plant operated by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (helicopter plant #1), paper products factory operated by Kelly Paper Products Co., electrician shop operated by Briggs & Stratton Corp., automotive parts factory run by General Motors Corp., ammunition storage depot used for storage purposes only during wartime before being converted into Army garrison during occupation months following war end - these sites are now known collectively as "The Garrison". New housing developments were built adjacent to military installations but most residents left once hostilities ended which may have been related to rationing policies introduced postwar limiting food items available outside urban areas pending confirmation from Allied authorities that no atomic weapons were developed or produced in India during that time frame In 1945 local banker J B Dorman opened locally owned Bank Of America which remains active today providing banking services include checking accounts open 24/7/365 along with numerous lending options including home equity loans etc.. also located here is still older brick building remainder standing across street from current bank headquarters now known as “Dorman Place”

More than thirty years later, when Stonington School closed down due to lack of students, Merrillville again experienced significant growth thanks to what is now known as The Learning Company (TLC). LC provided education opportunities for children throughout central Indiana; however, it is principally responsible for bringing muchneeded life back into downtown Merrillville after it had been largely vacated by businesses following World War II. Today, downtown remains one of bustling commercial districts within minutes’ walk from most residents’ homespun lives. Merrillville has seen some Significant Events over its lifespan including: 1) A fire destroyed much of downtown in 1938 which caused approximately $2 million worth damage 2) The arrival in 1945of America's first black president who inspired many local African Americansto move into or near Merrillville 3) Another large fire destroyed much business districtin 1970 followed by revitalization efforts 4) As noted earlier Downtown retains its vibrant commercial atmosphere today despite current economic challenges
