Merrillville was founded in 1851 by John Merrill and his family. The first store in Merrillville was built on the current site of the Community Church. The town was named after General George Washington Merrill, who donated land for its founding. In 1861, Merrillville became one of ten towns in Butler County to be incorporated as a village. The community's first post office opened in 1865 and continued service until it closed in 1935. In 1907, the first public school building was built and served as the town's primary school until it closed in 1961. It reopened as a private school from 1968 to 1984. From 1984 to 2006, it also served as the headquarters for Butler County Schools (formerly known as Central High School).

Merrillville is an incorporated town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Merrill and Virginia Greenough. Merrillville is located on a small stream that flows through the town. It is bordered to the north by Wartburg, to the east by DeKalb County and to the south by Potter County. The first settlers in what would become Merrillville were three families who arrived in 1799 from Connecticut: Caleb Merrill, his wife Sarah and their 2 children Caleb Jr., age 7 months, and Hannah, age 4 years old. They built a log cabin on what is now State Road 15 near present-day Parkersburg. The next year they erected a more permanent structure which became known as the Greenough House. This was their home until 1807 when they moved to nearby Wartburg where they lived until 1840 when they again relocated to Merrillville. In 1802 Nicholas Weems founded a grocery store in what would become Merrillville and it remains one of its most successful businesses today. He also developed land around what would later become Town Square which served as commercial center for both this town and surrounding villages for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1922. Merrillville's post office was established on December 10, 1837 (though mail had been delivered to Wartburg since January 1st). In 1865 Charles Aiken opened a general store in town which continued operations until 1886 when it burned down due to Hurricane Andrew damage; consequently, only general merchandise remained available at Aiken's shop during that time period. On June 12th 1907 local resident George Cushing set off fireworks from his home during summertime parade and celebration called “Tommy Day” throughout village; this event led to name change of Village Square community lawns into “Merrillhill green” following prohibition of fireworks within city limits back then - still practice today! Milt Hinton opened his original hardware store at corner of Third Street & Main Avenue (later renamed Fourth Street) soon after – becoming one of America’s earliest Hardware stores! From humble beginnings just two doors up from current day corner Fourth Street & Main Avenue Milt Hinton’s Hardware Store grew into one of Indianapolis’ largest wholesale Hardware retailers boasting over 350 employees including over 50 clerks!! Today there are nearly 20 Ames Bros hardware stores scattered throughout Marion county !! Finally – other than some very sporadic farmaceutic sales here or there thru out lifetime etc., much of our retail shopping happens online these days thru Amazon!!! So yes! Some things have changed since I started writing all these years ago but mostly our wonderful community has grown stronger together!!!!
