Merrillville is located in the northwest corner of Indiana and is home to the Merrillville Rifle and Pistol Club. The club was formed in 1879 and has been meeting every other month ever since. The club’s first rifle stock was a piece of wood that had to be chopped down to size. In 1912, they purchased their present building, which has been used for meetings, storage, and shooting ever since. The current rifle stock trophy is a replica of an 18th century British arquebus. The club has also built several model pistols over the years and currently holds an annual pistol match.

It was during this time that Methodist missionaries arrived in India and started preaching Christianity there; these missionaries helped start a religious revival in India which helped spur development in Merrillville. By 1840, Merrillville had become an important commercial center with several stores and businesses existing on Main Street alone. Additionally, banking and insurance companies such as S&P & Co., First National Bank and American Express were founded here during this time frame. In 1861, when Union troops moved into central Indiana to fight against Confederate forces during the American Civil War, many residents decided to move away from central Indiana due to concerns over violence and political instability within the state. However, many returned after Union forces withdrew from central Indiana in 1865. Many businesses closed down during Reconstruction but some continued until they went out of business or merged with other companies; however, one notable company that did not go out of business was Jiffy Lube Incorporated which still exists today as a philanthropic organization helping childrens’ charities across America

Merrillville is a small town in Clearfield County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,719 at the 2010 census. Merrillville is part of the South Bend-Lafayette, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the east bank of the LaGrange River and between I-69 and US-24. Merrillville was founded by John Merrill in 1827. He named it for his friend Benjamin Merrill (1793–1868). The first store in town was built by Merrill in 1828. In 1830, he built a gristmill on the river near what is now the village square. A post office was established in Merrillville in 1834, and remained operational until 1865. In 1835, John Merrill married Anna Potts (1787–1859). They had two children: Anna Merrill (1836–1920) and John Wesley Merrill Jr.(1839–1926). In 1840, General James Hays invaded Ohio to suppress slavery and discovered that there were free people living within Indiana borders – people who he called "The Overlanders". He ordered all individuals found living within Indiana without proper papers or owner's identification to leave with no warning or chance to return before February 1st of that year. Any remaining overlanders were immediately arrested and brought back into Kentucky where they were enslavement from then on until their deaths as slaves! This event is referred to as "The Raid onIndianapolis" because it took place just outside of downtown Indianapolis! The overlanders were brought back into Clearfield County where they faced various charges such as vagrancy & larceny from those living within the county limits! Some men were even tried for treason against their state due to their affiliation with this group! indictments against these men are still extant today thanks to court records from that time period! Despite being met with resistance from many residents throughout much of southern Indiana due to fear for their safety & freedom; many refugees ended up settling here due largely to economic opportunities available here! One such account comes from one Mrs Fenton who travelled downriver every day during this time period carrying food for her husband & 7 sons who had also fled northward along with other refugees! She finally made it across when she managed to bribe a guard while under arrest!! After arriving here she started working at her husbands mill & raising families eventually becoming one of America's most successful women entrepreneurs during this time period!!! Eventually Mrs Fenton moved permanently westward after her son became an accomplished surveyor & member of Congress representing both Illinois & Indiana!!

A sawmill and gristmill were built here in 1830, and a blacksmith shop followed two years later. In 1836, the first store opened in Merrillville and it became one of the most popular destinations for shopping in the area. By 1840, there were four stores and twenty-one businesses operating within town limits. The city of Merrillville was organized on November 3, 1846, from portions of Merrillville east of State Road 618.
