Merrillville is a small town in the state of Indiana, located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Indianapolis. The population was 6,814 at the 2010 census. Merrillville is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Merrillville was John Merrill, who arrived in 1787 and built a cabin on the current site of Town Square. The town was named after him in 1827 when it was given to his son-in-law, James Merrill Sr., by his wife Sarah Carruth. In 1837, James Merrill Jr.'s widow married David Bushnell, who had settled near present day Old Fort Wayne. David Bushnell's brother Amos purchased land east of town from DavidBushnell in 1839 and founded the village of Bushnellstown within it. The village name derived from bush or bough which were natural trees that stood along its banks during early years. In 1840, five men - Nathan Weiser, Solomon Pratt, Elias Poston, Hiram Aldrich and George Stephenson - erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street for $500 Each and called it "Merrillville." It served as their home until they moved to Nappanee in 1870 when they built their new brick house on First Street. The first post office at Merrillville was established on July 1, 1830 by Samuel Morse with the name "Nappanee." On April 12th 1865, it changed its name to "Merrillville" after Captain Athey Middletown whose family had been long settlers hereabouts and had become prominent citizens through their business activities and philanthropy including building the Grove Theatre which seated 2 thousand people for plays beginning in 1847 and continuing until 1922; donating over $100 000 towards various community enterprises such as school construction; support both local churches throughout their history while also becoming active members of many national organizations including being president (1890) and treasurer (1910) of the American Philosophical Society; member (1868)of both houses (the Indiana General Assembly) during its formative years prior to statehood; charter member (1889)of both theIndiana Historical Society & similar organization [the United States National Museum] then known as "National Academy". It should be noted that much information about early history surrounding this small community can only be gleaned through oral tradition or artifacts that have since passed away or been lost entirely like one old cannonball purported to date back to 1794 while still inside Fort Wayne! Prior research has suggested that this cannonball may actually depict an event leading up to America's settling process via Native Americans! As America's most populous state – boasting over 24 million residents – events like this are sure to leave an indelible mark upon our society! However rest assured there will always be someone able to provide documentary evidence confirming or disproving any claims made herein about pre-state Merrillville!
