The mall opened in 1974 and is now known as Quicken Loans Arena. In 1993, after years of discussion and searching by township officials, a public vote resulted in approval to rename Merrillville “John Fenton Place” in honor of one of its founders who had passed away earlier that year. In 2000-2001 voters also approved an amendment to the town charter changing its name back to “MerrillVILLE” following citizen input over several years during referenda process which began in 1999-2000 under then Town Manager Jeff Bowersman and continued through Mayor Tony Rinaldi until he left office in early 2001 amidst reports of conflicts within leadership between him and other members of municipal staff about how best move forward with this renamed municipality moniker Holder Street Community Center & ParkGateway Plaza never materialized; however all programs associated with these facilities continue unchanged today without Jeff Bowersman or any replacement being appointed) Today's economy depends heavily on manufacturing jobs located either downtown or across I-65 north from town limits due largely to Interstate 69 serving as both major arterial highway into/out of town and primary commercial corridor connecting all parts of northeast Indiana while providing limited opportunities for retail development given significant population growth since late 1990s primarily attributable to services sector employment growth leading mainly near I-465 interchange surrounded by large hospital complexes resulting from recent investment by Purdue Pharma Inc., parent company Affiliated Health Care Companies plc
