Merrillville is a small town in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area. Merrillville was founded in 1851 and named for David Merrill, an early settler. The first post office in Merrillville was established in 1852. In 1873, the town became a village and was renamed Merrillville Heights. In 1922, the village and township were merged into the city of Fort Wayne. The city annexed parts of Porter County in 1956 and 1986; however, until 2000 it remained a separate municipality with its own government and economic development entity known as Merrillville Township. The history of Merrillville began with David Merrill who arrived in what is now Porter County on September 15, 1851 from Ohio with his family. He purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) around present-day downtown to establish what would become known as Merrillville. David's brother Samuel also came to Indiana during this time and founded the city of Kokomo near Fort Wayne while David built a new home here which he called "Merrillvile". He started out very small - only having 10 residents when he first set up shop! However soon enough he learned how important it was to have a good market for his produce so he started selling goods door-to-door throughout his area including neighbouring towns such as Loretto and Washington Streets north of today’s downtown core – something few people did then or do now because there were no markets within those limits! His success led him to expand quickly into other areas adjacent to his farmlands: eastward along Washington Street towards Mishawaka (then spelled Menifee), westward through Mishawaka south towards Bloomington (then spelled Westfield), northwest all the way back to where he had begun sales on Washington Street just east of today’s downtown core! This wholesale marketing operation continued until after World War I when many farmers abandoned production due to increased competition from railroads! However by then it was too late – by 1920 only 3 businesses still operated within old Nishawaka boundaries making that once again an agricultural community without any commercial activity anywhere near its center! So much for prosperity... Although still thriving economically they made do rather than take their chances like many others during that difficult era – though some slowly regained some level of prosperity following World War II when heavy industry moved into town & manufacturing picked up again etc….. On October 9th 1909 David died suddenly leaving behind 4 childrenRebekah (brought up at home), Marvin (-4 years old 7/1/1892 killed by White chemical attack Little Rock AR ), Dora (+3 years old 2/9/1911 born murdered) & Howard (+2 years old 3/7/1920). All 4 children had attended public schools together but Rebekah dropped out after 8th grade & took off for college while Marvin finished high school but never went beyond 8th grade even though offered scholarships both times (& got one from Purdue Univ.). Daughter Rebekah married John Lundgren who ran a grocery store on Main Street before moving away in her 50’s due health concerns about living close enough to her mother yet far enough away not be able to hear her screaming coming down stairs at night 😕 After his death she sold most everything she owned including house & lot next door unto current day “Lakeview Place” (& creek running thru property) To make ends meet my husband dug an extra vat hole deep below ground onto property line Generator collector builtin power unit runs all year round etc…. For nearly 40yrs we did everything possible just couldn’t keep going another 5 yrs would have been too much trouble 😢
Merrillville was founded in 1834 by James Merrill, a lawyer and landowner. The town was named for him because he donated land for the establishment of a courthouse and school. Merrillville quickly became a busy commercial center, with mills, stores, and churches dotting the landscape. In the late 1800s, Merrillville experienced growth as a result of its location on the Indiana Railroad. The town grew rapidly and numerous new businesses were developed, including an insurance company and a flour mill.
