In the early 1800s, Merrillville was a small town in central Indiana. It was home to a large gunsmithing business and a population of around 100 people. The gun industry in this area was very important, and Trigger Company was one of the most well-known businesses in the community. Trigger Company manufactured various firearms including pistols, rifles, and shotguns. trigger company products were sold throughout the Midwest and even internationally. Many famous shooters from that time include General George Armstrong Custer and Jesse James himself. In addition to their firearms production, Trigger Company also made plunger guns which helped farmers hurl manure into their fields by using them as Weapons of War.

It fired successfully at first, but then refused to reload. The men realized that the trigger was defective and replaced it with another one.

In 1859, Merrillville became the home of the first post office in Indiana. The town continued to grow rapidly and by 1870 had a population of 1,500 people. By 1890, Merrillville had reached its peak as a commercial center with several large businesses including the Central Canal Company, the Rood House Livery stable, and the Merchants National Bank. In 1907, when Indiana seceded from the United States and became an independent country known as Mexico, Merrillville lost all its commericalactivity but still retains some Historical significance due to its proximity to Mexico City
Merrillville is a town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Putnam County and one of its most populous towns. Merrillville has been a thriving center for trade and commerce since its founding by English farmers in 1824. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century as it became an important transportation and manufacturing center for the region. In 1905, Merrillville was named after banker Nathaniel Merrill.
