By 1875, Merrillville had become an important commercial center with many businesses including a bank, flour mills, newspapers, and hospitals. The town experienced significant economic decline during the Great Depression but rebounded after World War II with growth in manufacturing. Today, Merrillville is one of the most prosperous Small Town USA communities and is home to many high-tech companies as well as several large shopping malls.

Merrillville became a popular small city in the 19th century, and it continued to grow into the 20th century. Today, Merrillville is a thriving community with a rich history that has been touched by many important events. Nicholas Merrill was an entrepreneur who saw the potential for growth in the tiny village he had created on the banks of the Wabash River. He set up a store and mill in what is now Merrillville, and he soon realized that his town had potential for much more than just agriculture. Merrillville became known as a manufacturing center during the 19th century, and it attracted major manufacturers such as Singer Sewing Machines, American Telephone & Telegraph Company, Deere Farming Equipment, and others. Merrillville also played an important role in Indiana's history during this time period. In 1847, Union General Tom Pemberton attacked Camp Chase near present-day Indianapolis while seeking to break out of our state’sentrenched position within Confederation; this event is considered one of the key turning points in Indiana’s Civil War (see timeline below). Fearing Confederate assault on their positions at Fort Dearborn – which was located only minutes away from camp – Union General Pemberton ordered his men to march southward along Lake Erie rather than risk being surrounded by Confederate forces again. This strategic decision saved almost 200 soldiers lives and helped secure Indiana’s neutrality during the war. In addition to its role inIndiana's history, Merrillville also hosted numerous important meetings throughout the 20th century that were instrumental in developing many aspects of southwestern Indiana including education, business management, law enforcement, and social services. These meetings were often called “town meetings” because all residents were invited to attend them - not just those who lived close to where they were held! In 1951, Mayor John Harkness convenedthe first modern school board meeting in Indianapolis when he asked residents for their input on how best to provide instruction for children living outside of downtown Indianapolis proper (see photo below). The idea behind these meetings was simple: To get feedback from locals about what they wanted done within their own communities so that they could begin making decisions about how best to serve their constituents better! Today, there are still significant reminders of nineteenth-century life present throughout Merrillvillenow through local businesses such as The Old Millinery Shop & Bakery which opened its doors back in 1927; The Gilded Age Opera House which served as both home theater venue and polling place during early twentieth century elections; The Masonic Lodge #2 which meets monthly at 7 p.m.;andThe Grange Hallwhich serves as both museum/gallery AND meeting house/social space today (see photos below). In addition, several streets within town continueto bear nicknames from previous decades such as “Nailsetter Row” or simply “The Streets". Overall, it can be said with certainty that without Nicholas Merrill – aka "The Father Of Our Village" – there would be no modern day Merrillvillenow!
