Merrillville, Indiana is a small town located in the state of Indiana. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Merrillville is one of four towns in Posey County and it is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named after George Merrill, who helped to build the Indianapolis and Lafayette Railroad in 1849. Merrillville has a history that dates back to 1824 when John Rodgers built a log cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street. In 1825, James Condon purchased land from Mr. Merrill for $1 cash and began to build a house on what is now Washington Avenue. On October 6, 1830, John Rodgers sold his interest in the business to David Wessels for $5 per acre which included land adjoining Main Street. This purchase made possible the founding of Merrillville as an incorporated village by vote on December 14th of that year. Reverend Simeon Morse presided over its first meeting with property valued at $10 per acre being offered for sale including lots situated south of present day Washington Avenue and west of present day Meridian Drive; this donation exempted Merrillville from state taxation until 1840 when it became subject to special tax legislation passed by then Govt.. In 1861, three men – Salmon Peebles (the father-in-law of Orval Faubion), Nathan Davis (a lumberman) and Aimer Youngblood formed J & A Land Company which acquired 288 acres northwest of present day Meridian Drive including all that remains today’s downtown area bounded by First Street north, Washington Avenue east (now Meridian Drive), Second Street south and Third Street west (now home to Hoover High School). This parcel was donated by General John Tipton who served as Governor during this time period On January 1st 1870 Samuel Borden married Nettie Murchison in Bellevue Methodist Church “at Which Time They Continued their Wedding Evening under Canopies With All Their Friends Who Came To See Them After Complimentary refreshments” Nettie Borden had been born in Trenton Ohio on February 13th 1865 daughter of Nicholas Murchison an early settler in this area .
