Merrillville is a city in and the county seat of Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. The population was 6,516 at the 2010 census. Merrillville was founded in 1809 as a small log cabin town on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. It became a full-time village in 1837 when it merged with neighboring townships to form Vanderburgh County. In 1869, Merrillville unsuccessfully petitioned for statehood within Indiana; however, it continued to be an integral part of the state until 1907. In 1906, due to its location on the main transportation artery between Chicago and Indianapolis, Merrillville became the first city in Vanderburgh County to become racially integrated. At that time, only white people were allowed into certain areas of town while black people were limited to using public housing located just outside of town limits. In 1970–71, Merrillvillians erected a large artificial beachhead at milepost 14 on State Road 54 which served as their official welcome center for incoming students from all over Indiana and adjacent states during summer college programs across Indiana's ten-state region (the so-called “Summer Belt”). The beachhead also functioned as an open air market place during these years; local merchants sold goods such as clothes, seafood, etc., directly onto the sand without having to transported any products further away or through markets inside town limits. In 1971–72,[1] construction began on what would eventually become Notre Dame University’s then new School of Business Administration Building (now known as Tower I), located just east of downtown since that year’s summer college sessions had relocated outtown followingarksquare riots that occurred nearby at Freedom Hall near IUPUI (then called Purdue University).[2] That same year also saw the opening of what would eventually be known as The Arts District which included much older commercial structures along Market Street between 4th and 5th streets north/southwest of campus annexed by the district from parts of several other commercial districts within downtown including those belonging to Armour Manufacturing Company[3], Wabash Cotton Mills[4], & Dayton Machine Works[5]. A $6 million dollar bond issue was issued by Mayor William Dever III in 1975 for expansion and renovation projects including beautificationof Avenue G between 3rd Street NW and 4th Street NE renamed after then First Lady Betty Ford – former president Geraldine Ferraro – future Ulysses S GrantWoodson Library director Drue Burge & her husband Dick Burge both philanthropists who had previously endowed Memorial Drive Elementary School & Park Square Shopping Center adjacent thereto with additional funds –DrueBurge being instrumental in securing passage [of legislation authorizing creation Of National Gay Task Force] giving us our present name today: Merrillille! During this time many businesses closed or converted into apartments because there wasn't enough demand for more space within downtown despite increasing growth rates associated with oil production around this time—-a fact often mentioned when discussing Centerville Township directly southward adjacent thereto (& now part thereof) which experienced significant growth during this period despite few if any major investments made therein attributable thereto…………….. Nevertheless current destruction/conversion taking place along alley closest KGHB visible upon approach from Main Street sideIAS well underway various signs indicating its impending fate

Merrillville was founded in 1854 by the Merrill brothers. The community currently occupies a location on the edge of a large field that has been in its present form since 1881. It is one of several small towns located in and around Indianapolis, Indiana that have experienced significant growth during the past few decades. The town grew rapidly due to its location near Indianapolis' business district and its access to transportation options. In addition, Merrillville became known for its clean environment and efficient city government. Today, the town retains a strong sense of community and support from its residents. Merrillville's history began with two families who arrived in 1854. John Merrill, brother to George Merrill, was the first settler in what is now Merrillville. He and his wife, Lucilla, established a farm on land that they had bought from the local Indian chief. John Merrill also built a log cabin which he used as their home until he moved out in 1865. In 1881, James Wirtz started up Wirtz Bros., an ice cream company which later became Indiana's largest grocery store chain. The company relocated to new facilities at 10th Street and Meridian Avenue in 1901 following passage of state law providing for such relocations across county lines. In 1927, Wirtz sold his interest in the company to J & M Gorman who continued it until 1971 when it merged with Kroger Co.. Merrillville enjoyed another period of rapid growth after World War II ended; however, this period ended with the recession of 1973-1974 which devastated many small Midwestern towns including Merrillville affected by high gasoline prices at that time. With limited economic opportunities available outside of Indianapolis during these difficult times, many residents decided to leave their homes for greener pastures elsewhere within metropolitan Indy or other major cities throughout America during this time frame.. The current incarnation of Merrillville began Toomer's Creek Flooding Incident Investigation Commission reportin 1984 when Mayor Donnell Pritchett formed an exploratory committee charged with finding solutions to prevent future floods caused by heavy rains runoff originating westward along Toomer’s Creek (now White River) through existing farmland adjacent to town boundaries into residential areas within our limits- particularly those lying immediately southward along both banks thereof – although not limited thereto: Thereafter various committees were appointed pursuant thereto culminating finally in creation today’s commission composed principally but not exclusively thereof own citizens acting under direction thereinfrom consisting wholly or almost entirely self-employed having no connection whatever whatsoever whatsoever either with any corporate entity directly or indirectly interested thereinwith thereby confirming again our reluctance hitherto everto become members either as body politic or officers ultimately responsible for anything done hereunder though we cannot avoid disapproving constantly all things going on
