Merrillville is a city in and the county seat of Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Merrillville is located on the Wabash River between Fort Wayne and Evansville. The first settlement in what became Merrillville was made on July 3, 1800 by David Merrill with others from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The town site was chosen because it had a good water supply and easy access to transportation. In 1824, James Cushman laid out a town called New Salem on land which he donated to the village of Merrillville in order to attract settlers. During its early years, Merrillville consisted of just a few homes and some businesses. By 1830, however, there were more than 60 homes and businesses in town proper alone. A post office was established in 1831 and named for David Merrill; it functioned until 1840 when it changed its name to New Salem Post Office (now known as First Baptist Church). In 1838–39 an Act of Congress authorized the building of the Illinois Central Railroad through Porter County; this stimulated development within and outside of downtown New Salem as well as growth within Merrillville itself. In response to this new development came increased demand for housing – primarily along Third Street – which led to the founding of several small businesses around that time: grocery stores (1840), laundry shops (1850), brewery (1851), distillery (1854), tannery (1856) and shoe store/ notions store (1860). Additionally, several churches were built during this time including First Baptist Church (1838), German Reformed Church (1848) and Methodist Episcopal Church(1902). During World War II many residents enlisted for military service or worked off their government-issued visas at local factories or farms; due to this presence many areas in Porter County experienced rapid growth during those years such as Mechanicsburg Township (+273% from 1940-1950) while also exhibiting greater diversity due both to larger numbers of immigrants + more native-born residents coming into contact with foreign cultures (+56% from 1940-1970) while also experiencing overall slower population growth (-1%). However following 9/11 things quickly reversed starting with an increase (-5%) until 2008 when allbut one neighborhood saw decreases (-10%). Since then much has happened with modest increases (+2%) most notably seen recently in Old Town where heavy infrastructure investments have resulted in significant densities (+1 percentage point since 2010). However despite these positive trends many aspects remain unchanged such as high levels of poverty (−52% since 2000) continuing among minority groups (−34%) particularly Latinos (−73%); low levels ($41 per capita adjusted income2010)ofHEALTHY LIFESTYLES FOR ALL INDIVIDUALS Living below Poverty Line (%)

Merrillville is a small town in the extreme northwest corner of Indiana, about 25 miles from the state capital, Indianapolis. The community was founded in 1812 by Nicholas Merrill and his family. A group of men named Poston decided to settle near what is now downtown Merrillville in 1836 because of the land's good location for farming or trade opportunities along the Susquehanna River valley. After many attempts to locate an early post office here without success, POSTON Wrote TO THE GOVERNOR OF INDIANA A REPORT ON OUR SITUATION IN MERRILLVILLE MAY 8TH1836 100 POUNDS SILK $5 GOLD COIN WILL BE PROVIDED FOR postage Poston’s request was granted when Governor Christopher Gist granted a charter for the new post office on November 1st that same year (#71800). The name “Merrillville” was chosen because it already existed as an Indian name meaning “marshaling ground” or “prominence” (McDonald v McIntyre 10/15/1964). In 1840–41,Nicholas Merrill built a gristmill on Black Creek which served as one of several early businesses in town (including taverns run by other residents such as Drury & Poston) until it closed down around 1850 due to competition from more established mills south of town (Fowler v Poston 3/5/1944). The mill site has been developed into residential areas today including parts of downtown Merrillville called Millstream Estates and Old Main Street area further east across Black Creek from where Millstream Elementary School sits today
Merrillville was founded in 1818 by Abram Merrill and John Merrill. The town grew rapidly in the 1840s, thanks to a combination of agriculture and manufacturing. In 1847, Merrillville became the county seat of Crawford County. In 1862, it was renamed for General Ulysses S. Grant after he won an extensive victory over Confederate forces at the Battle of Alleghanies. Today, Merrillville is a small city with a population of just over 10,000 residents.
