Kapp's mills produced items such as corduroys (now Wrangler jeans), dainty lace woolsens, shawls and handkerchiefs; toiletries like Detergent (Pringles), Laundry Detergent (Lysol), Soap (Lysol) and Shampoo (OxiClean). With rapid expansion came increased production costs which led to Kapp selling his assets back to Procter & Gamble in 1916 for $1 million dollars ($102 million today). Merrillville was founded in 1836 by Ezekiel Merrill and his wife, Charity. The first post office was established in Merrillville in 1837. In 1841, the Merrill family donated land to the town for a public square. The Mellers also built the first school in Merrillville. The town's name was changed from Merrillville to its current name of Vincennes in 1881 when it became a part of the Indiana Territory.
