After several years of operation, Pemberton sold his mill to Andrew Carnegie in 1902 for $2 million USD. The mill still stands today as part of Carnegie Hall (built 1907–1909). In 1912, locals organized a baseball team called the Indians which played its home games at Wabash Park until 1925 when they moved to nearby Mishawaka Stadium; they would play there until 1955 when they disbanded due to lack of funds. In 1945, local residents formed a football team called the Colts which played its home games at Bloomingdale High School until 1957 when it merged with another local football team to form Central Michigan University's (CMU) Wolverines football program; this stadium also served as Central Michigan University's (CMU) athletic center from 1958-1971 before it was replaced by CMU's current stadium which opened in 1971: Memorial Stadium (named after longtime assistant coach George "Bugs" Beal).

Nicholas Metcalfe and his brother John founded a small community here in 1785. The town grew rapidly, and by 1802 it had a population of over 200. In 1814, after the Treaty of Fort Wayne ended the War of 1812, Martinsville became part of the United States. The town continued to grow, and by 1830 its population had reached 2,500. By 1860 Martinsville had become an important center for trade and commerce in central Indiana. After portions were annexed to neighboring cities during the late 19th century, Martinsville remained an important commercial center until World War II when it declined as a result of increased competition from larger cities.
