Martinsville is a town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 9,883 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville–Vincennes Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Martinsville were French traders in 1671 and 1672. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Goodrich, who arrived in 1784. He built a cabin on the banks of the White River. Goodrich's cabin became the nucleus of what would become Martinsville. In 1824, John Ritchey founded a small village on his farm east of present-day Martinsville. It was renamed Ritcheystown in honor of John Ritchey, an early settler and postmaster hereabouts. The first telephone line from Indianapolis to Evansville was laid through Martinsville in 1925 and it soon became one of the most important telephone communities in central Indiana. In 1941, American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) constructed its main campus here for its Bell Laboratories research facility; today US Cellular operates a cellular station within walking distance of AT&T's campus buildings. In 1984, Procter & Gamble purchased Hormel Foods Corporation's easternmost Purdue division - including half of martinvilletown - for $1 billion; this made Martinsville one of Procter & Gamble's largest divestitures ever outside North America In 2006-2007 Procter & Gamble announced they would be selling their remaining assets within 14 months time...thus ending over 60 years as a major player in this community

Martinsville, Indiana is a small town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Martinsville was founded in 1814 by Andrew Miller and others as a stop on the road between Fort Wayne and Bloomington. The community became an important center for Indian trade during the early 19th century. In 1851, Martinsville incorporated as a village. In 1928, it merged with neighboring Knox City to form Martinsville-Knox City Municipal Corporation. The combined municipality had a population of 2,953 at the 2000 census. The history of Martinsville began with land purchases by Andrew Miller in 1814 and construction of his log cabin on what is now State Road 622 beginning in 1816-1817. At that time it was known as "Miller's Ferry." By 1830 over sixty families had settled there and started production of lumber for local homes and businesses including milling grain for local feeders such as cornmeal and flour into sacks/bags which were then transported to nearby cities for sale or use in manufacturing products such as hats or shoes. In 1851 establishment of Fort Wayne Normal School opened up new opportunities for education within miles of where most people lived so people from surrounding villages moved closer to get their education under one roof In 1870 Alex Haley came to live in Martinsville when he left his home near Terre Haute after being expelled from school because he could not write well enough to pass standardized tests He wrote his autobiography here called "The Autobiography of Alex Haley" Also during this time there was growth around mills which produced everything from diapers to clothing until World War II when production stopped because allied forces bombed the town killing many residents including Haley who lived here until he died at age 96 years old
Martinsville was founded by George Stephenson in 1814. It became a town in 1847, and was made the county seat of Posey County in 1853. The first courthouse was built in 1856. In 1861, Fort Wayne was founded nearby and Martinsville became its principal commercial center. The fort served as a military post until it was abandoned in 1865.
