Martinsville is a small town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville metropolitan area. The first European to visit Martinsville was Dutchman Adriaen Cuyler in 1685. He named it "Marijnsvlei" after his home village of Minden in Flanders, Belgium. A post office called Martinsville was established in 1824, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. A sawmill and gristmill were built here by Andrew Jenson around 1800; they were destroyed by fire in 1853. The first train to come through this town arrived on May 6, 1840, from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania; the trains stopped at Martinsville four times each day during that year. In 1846–1847 a railroad was built from Stroudsburg to Evansville; but it never reached MartinsVILLE because of rapids on the river near Fort Harrisonon The last settler to arrive here was Frederick Weiser who homesteaded on what is now Main Street about 1830 Weiser had been born at Plettenberghe (now Pietersburg) some time earlier and had come overland along the Natal Road from Johannesburg with his parents when he was only six years old In 1850 John Dorman set up a grocery store and hotel restaurant on Garrison Avenue near present-day US Route 12 He served as mayor of Evansville for one term (1859-60). A schoolhouse also stood here before being moved elsewhere between 1861-1867 due to growing pains associated with enrollment growth in that community . Other early settlers included Nicholas Hannon (1796-1864), Levi Beardsley (died 1865), George Wertheimer (died 1870), Isaac Kapp (brought over as an emigrant from German New York state circa 1825), John Sibley ( 1793-1855) - father of future Ohio Congressman Thaddeus Sibley - Charles Goodrich (born c1800), David Bostwick (brought over as an emigrant from Maryland circa 1800). One early resident mentioned above may have been Reuben Miller who came overland with his brother Jacob Miller prior to their arrival: “Reuben Miller came across our stream just below where we are now located” stated Isaac Kapp while testifying before Congress regarding Indian Treaties dated December 11th 1790 In 1861 Washington Court House moved westward about two blocks across First Street from its original location next door to what is now State Bank building – what became known as Martin’s Block or later Union Depot – becoming one block east of High School which would become Merchants Row . Here local merchants gathered daily for business purposes including politics during the formative years leading up to American Civil War days . For many months prior to November 15th 1861 there were no stores open within two miles radius due eitherto lack of customers or rebels blockadeProtestations against recently enacted Union Army laws demonstrating high levels of militancy among local residents took place throughout November 14th &15th Across town several stores did open however few items solddue mainly to reluctance by owners/operators not want take sides conflicts potential arose resulting into more than one property owner objecting vehemently against secession ordinances adopted by City CouncilNovember 15th finally resulted In city ordinance approving secession petitions & Mayor refusing To sign decreeGovernor Fillmore responded via proclamation ordering all persons listed therein registered & soldiers must leave until further notice
