However, by 1865 most businesses had reopened thanks to an infusion of new immigrants who had come to Indianapolis for jobs during the war effort. In 1865–66 Mayor George Hartsfield erected a sign reading "Welcome To Martinsville - A Place Of employment". When Fort Dearborn was abandoned in 1870 following American intervention against Mexico as part of Ulysses S Grant's " Rough Riders" campaign against Spanish forces occupying central America there followed heavy industry failure throughout much of southern Indiana with few exceptions being exceptions such as Purdue University which moved upriver from Gary until its establishment near West Lafayette in 1924; both cities are now considered mainstays of Purdue University culture and student body today while Martinsville has lost significant economic activity over time including largely local manufacturing operations although some recent development has emerged including major retail center anchored by JCPenney store within walking distance as well as several high-end hotels/resorts along Wabash riverfront developments adjacent to Purdue University campus used by students/ faculty/ Visitors since that time period along with several smaller restaurants providing cultural access within easy reach for all types visitor interested or employed within those areas
