The company manufactured cannons and other artillery pieces for the United States military. In 1902, the company merged with Phelps Dodge Corporation to form Phelps Dodge/Martinsville Copper & Brass Co., which continued manufacturing artillery pieces until 1918 when it merged with Bethlehem Steel Corporation to form Bethlehem Steel Corporation/Phelps Dodge Incorporated.
Martinsville, Indiana is a small town in the southern part of Indiana. It was founded in 1827 by farmers and landholders who moved from neighboring Attica, Ohio. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century as it became an important center for agriculture and manufacturing. In 1907, Martinsville was designated as the capital of Howard County,Indiana. The city has since undergone various changes, including becoming a bedroom community for Indianapolis; however, its culture and history remain strong. The first settlers to Martinsville were farmers who had come overland from Ohio. They built their homes around a small stream that ran through the town. By 1830, there were about fifty people living in Martinsville. The economy of early Martinsville was based on agriculture and trade with surrounding counties. However, after the American Civil War ended in 1865, farming became less profitable due to increasing competition from railroads and other businesses. In 1827, farmer Robert Hutton established a store at what is now the intersection of High Street and Sherman Road in Martinsville. He began selling goods to local farmers and traders along High Street until he acquired his own Store building in 1829-30. At that time, Martinsville consisted of just five houses with a population of thirty-six people total: twenty-four men and four women). The first public school opened in 1834; it was called "The School House" because it stood on Main Street near where present day First Avenue meets Sherman Road (now known as Meridian Drive). After two years of construction cost $1,-000 (equivalent to $50,-0000 today), the school was dedicated on October 1st by Governor James Kappey Jr.. In 1840s 2nd Lieutenant John Witherspoon also opened a shop here which later became known as "Witherspoon's". During World War II many residents took up arms to join the war effort and some even served overseas; however most citizens turned their back on militarism after 1945 when America saw an influx of refugees following World War II . In 1957-58 major renovations were done to both high schools which included new classrooms/theater/media areas etc...this led to increased enrollment & prompted then Superintendent Driscoll to rename both high schools "Martin's"
