The history of rifles in Martinsville, Indiana goes back to 1825. At that time, the area was part of the United States Department of War. The department purchased land east of Logansport for a rifle range and post office. In 1828, the first rifle match took place at this range. The matches were important because they determined who would be able to purchase land within the military for gunnery training purposes. In 1847, the department moved its headquarters to Indianapolis and reopened the rifle range there. It continued to operate until 1957 when it was closed down due to budget cuts. In 1858, Colonel John Sacket bought large tracts of land north of Logansport in order to establish a Rifle Range Company Ltd., which would continue operating until 1916. This company manufactured rifles and shotguns for use by soldiers in combatting Indian Wars and other military engagements around Great Lakes region during this time period. In 1912, General George Custer withdrew his regiment from service at Fort Supply near New Carlisle after losing an engagement against Native Americans at Little Bighorn Creek; however, Custer's body still remains buried on Fort Supply grounds today as one of many Revolutionary War-era artifacts located there (the rest are currently exhibited at nearby Ft Hancock). At that point in Martinsville's history, rifle stocks had begun making an appearance on various buildings and structures throughout town beginning with a store called "The Rifle Warehouse" on Main Street in 1868-69 operated by Mr. & Mrs. Auldsqvist from Pekin, Illinois Territory (later Cook County). They imported Chinese-made rifles into Martinsville through their business partner Driggs & Company in Chicago; however these firearms were not commonly used here because firearm enthusiasts preferred American made arms instead due to their superior accuracy and firepower qualities when compared to any imported products available at that time! 1) By 1870/71 Mr Haddock started building what became known as "The Gables" house on North High Street which served as both his residence AND his shooting ground / workshop while also being used by local farmers as storage facilities for their surplus guns! He later sold it off but 1 or 2 barns remain standing today (on either side of South High street) including one now housing some vintage equipment used during indoor sporting events over 50 years ago including Winchesters(!!), Trap Guns etc... However contemporary accounts do not support this account as there are no evidence remains or ruins evident anywhere near today's village site other than what is found at nearby old fort site today where streams merge into each other forming what appear to be ancient earthworks approximately 100 yards north thereof; however this location cannot be confirmed archaeologically as all remains have been removed over time by developers/law enforcement personnel looking for any possible link to earlier sites mentioned herein - www Google Earth). Martinsville is a village in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The Village was founded in 1819 by Daniel Boone and named for his father, Major James Martin. Martinsville has been nicknamed "The Brain of the Midwest" because of its location on the Indianapolis–Fort Wayne Railroad and its strategic position as the crossing point for several major east-west roads. The railroad allowed farmers to bring their crops north to be stored and then sold back south, creating a large market for goods and helping to shape Martinsville into an agricultural town that still thrives today. The first post office in Martinsville was established in 1820, and became known as Boone Post Office until it was renamed in 1893 after Major James Martin (1796-1872). In 1830, Michael Ladd opened a store called "Ladd's Store." By 1840, John Henshaw had opened a store called "Henshaw's Store." By 1850, there were six stores open within 1 1/2 miles of each other. In 1865, Jno Matson erected a gristmill on the site of what is now known as Central Middle School which continued operation until 1906 when it burned down. A new mill was built on the same site in 1892 and continued operations until 1951 when it also burned down. Another mill operated from 1911-1920 across the street from Central Middle School before it too burnt down. In 1912, an issue of "Household Magazine" featured houses located near where Central Middle School now stands; these houses are now known as East Sidehouses #1 through #6. In 1916-1920s two churches were built: First Methodist Episcopal Church (now First Baptist Church) on present day 4th Street between State Road 33rd & 34th Streets and Second Presbyterian Church (now Stonington Presbyterian Church) on present day 5th Street between State Road 33rd & 34th Streets - both buildings are still standing today! In 1921-1924 one additional church building – Third Presbyterian Church – was built across from Central Middle School but this building also burned down in 1951! Later that year another gristmill – Higginbotham Mill — became operational west side of town along Highways 96 & 96A just outside current day boundaries of Martinsville Village proper! This mill continued operation until late 1960s when it also caught fire! A new mill began operations just east of Higginbotham Mill about 1966 with plans to continue operating into the 1990s but this mill too failed to succeed due to lack of financial support . As early as 1815 Indian traders had encountered land grants given by President James Kapp to various families including Colonel John Brown’s grant dated November 12th 1795 which included “an hundred acres [including] all or any part of this Township aforesaid” granting access not only “to fish upon Sturgeon River” but also “the use thereof for military purposes during any war which may happen hereafter”; later that year General Anthony Wayne awarded General Rossiter13 square miles extending southwestward from Richmond County line thence northeasterly unto Shreveport Landing thence easterly unto said landing lying upon Turtle Creek commencing at said creek mouth then southerly along said creek bank continuing northeasterly thereto past Raeford Park thence easterly unto Fort Wayne being bounded therein by Ironton Township line soever granted thereby…. pulse ground having never been patented or assigned either Claim or Use whatever Thereupon Colonel John Brown or any other party entered into possession thereof exclusive thereof with full Power To employ Indians therein without Consent Of The Said Grantsees notwithstanding Any contrary Entry Made By The Indian Agent anterior To His Departure From These Lines ).
