Martinsville, Indiana is a small town located in the central part of Indiana. It was founded in 1824 by General David Martins and his brother-in-law, Colonel John S. Pemberton. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the hunting grounds of the Pembertons and other prominent citizens. The first courthouse in Martinsville was built in 1830. In 1835, the Martinsville Post Office was established and remained in operation until 1906. In 1881, Martinsville became an incorporated village with a population of approximately 3,000 people. The village had three churches, two schools, a fire department, and a water system. Martinsville is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,722 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Martinsville was Peter Martin who landed on May 24, 1800 on a small island in what is now Kosciusko County. He married Anna Wojciechowska and had six children: John (1799-1872), Christopher (1801-1868), Josephine (1803-1893), Margaret (b. 1805), and Anna Maria (b. 1808). In 1807, Nicholas Kapp bought land from Peter Martin for $1,000 and started to build a log cabin near where he lived today known as the "Old Kapp Cabin." In 1830 Nicholas Kapp sold his land to General David Fenton for $4,000 which included the present day Martinsville village site. The first post office was established in Martinsville on October 7, 1847 by George Aiken with Prentiss Wells as director. The name change came about because of Edwin Epps' purchase of the original Post Office building from General Fenton in 1865 which became known as "The Olde House". This building served as the town's main post office until it burned down in 1907. The current structure was built around 1915 and again used as the town hall until it caught fire in 1984 and was replaced by a new building which still serves as the town hall today. The first store opened in Martinsville on December 12th 1870 by James Murchison at 4 South Main Street under contract from Nathan Bedford Forrest Jr.. The first white people to settle in Martinsville, Indiana were the Houser family. George Houser and his wife, Sarah, arrived in 1814 and started a small farm on the east side of town. The couple had two children, John and Eliza. In 1821, they moved to the west side of town and started a new farm. George died in 1825, leaving behind four children: John (1826-1902), Sarah (1827-1910), Henry (1829-1915), and Irene (1831-1920). In 1828, John married Rebecca Cook and Started a new farm near present day Johnson Road. The couple had six children: Anna(1830-1900), Herbert(1833-1911), Edwin(1835-1912), Alice(1838-1900), Franklin(1840-1920)
