Martinsville is a city in and the county seat of Marshall County, Indiana, United States. The population was 12,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The city is named after General Andrew Johnson, who was mayor of Indianapolis from 1876 to 1880. The first permanent settler in what is now Martinsville was James K. Polk, who arrived in 1814 and built a log cabin on the banks of the White River. He served as justice of the peace for Marshall County for many years before moving his family to Lafayette Township in 1828. In 1840, he married Catharine Davenport and their son James K., Jr., founded Greencastle Township with others early settlers including John Browning and Eli Whitney. In 1860, when Abraham Lincoln became president of the United States, he decided to run for office in Indiana and decided to come through Marshall County instead of going through Chicago or other big cities because there were no votes available there yet. On November 3rd 1860, Lincoln was elected President of America by an overwhelming majority over John Bell Howard (whose running mate), winning without any majoritarian opposition in a territory that had not yet been admitted into the Union as a state. At this time only Illinois and Missouri were still unincorporated territories; Indiana had become oneofthe five original U S states on May 4th [1865]. Lincoln's victory at Peoria Institute on November 3rd 1860 created great excitement throughout America because it showed that Abraham Lincoln could be successful even if he didn't have much money or powerful friends – something which would later prove true during his two terms as President of America). After being inaugurated as President on January 20th 1861, Lincoln traveled throughout Indiana giving speeches and meetings with farmers/stockholders etc., before taking his first steps towards creating new laws regulating land transactions within our newly acquired state! On February 15th 1861 he issued an executive order known as "The Emancipation Proclamation", which ordered all slaves found free within six months wherever they lived must leave their masters – whether they owned property or not! This proclamation outraged many people who felt that slavery should continue unchanged while their fellow citizens were being forced off their lands! When Confederate forces invaded Kentucky on April 12th 1861 (one day after Abraham Lincoln had announced his Emancipation Proclamation), Marshal County sided with Confederate forces against their federal government counterparts – becoming one of just four counties in Indiana to do so! However despite this clear disloyalty by local citizens (and most notably Mayor James Kylan), Marshal’s officials remained loyal to both sides during THE CIVIL WAR! Martinsville played a significant role during THE CIVIL WAR by handling supplies for both Union forces and Confederate troops alike- making it possible for these armies to operate without fear of enemy retaliation! With war raging around them constantly, civilians also risked capture or death by working either side’s military supply lines… doing anything To survive!!! AfterTHE CIVIL WAR ended & Reconstruction began across America–Marshal Countians quickly started rebuilding-starting with building new homes & infrastructure like roads & hospitals-& contributed greatly TO THAT RECOVERY!!
