Martinsville is located in Johnson County, Indiana and has a population of over 10,000. The community was founded in 1836 by John Martin and his brothers. The first store in Martinsville was built on the current site of the present day Walmart. In 1847, the town had a school and post office. The first sawmill in Martinsville was built around 1830. By 1860, there were three stores, two banks, a church, and four dwellings. By 1870, the town had seven businesses including a millinery shop and an undertaker’s office. During World War II much activity took place at Fort Myer near Arlington Heights due to its strategic location within easy reach of both Chicago and points east across Lake Michigan for munitions production; however most residents left early 1945 before hostilities ended.
