In 1922, when Bloomington began annexing parts of neighboring Union Township (), Martinsville lost its status as a township but continued to enjoy many privileges such as voting rights for all residents regardless of address or political affiliation. When Bloomington dissolved its municipal government in 1973 (), Martinsville reverted back to township form with only limited powers until 1985 when they were granted full authority by state law (). Today's economy is based largely on agriculture with some light manufacturing along with service sector jobs located throughout Boone County including those at Pritchard's original mill site just north of town on the river bank where power plants now generate electricity for neighboring counties; across from Interstate 65; northwest adjacent to Purdue University; east adjoining local medical centers: Bloomington Regional Medical Center (BMC) & Rush University Medical School (USH); southeast adjacent to Illinois State University; and southwest adjacent to Lucas Oil Stadium/IndyCar racing complex known collectively as "The Brickyard".

The early days of Martinsville were difficult due to difficulties obtaining enough funding to buildroads and other infrastructure necessary for growth. However, through hard work and determination, the town slowly began to grow and prosper during this time period. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Martinsville proper while also serving as employees at local businesses including John Kirby's grocery store which was then one of largest stores in Indianapolis at that time! During this time period,Martin County also experienced some very significant milestones such as becoming statehood on July 16th, 1829; being reorganized into Howard County on January 1st; and finally becoming part of Indiana on December 15th,. These events helped contribute tomartinsville's rapid growth during these years! In 1843 however, things started to change for martinvillians when a group of men led by Jno Ewing arrived from Kentucky looking for land to settle down & start anew – they did not find what they were looking for though they did manage to found several farms around central martinville & vicinity etc., making them rich thru their exploitation thereof (Ewing).
