Martinsville, Indiana is a small town located in Howard County, Indiana. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Howard County. The town was originally named "New Albany" after New Albany, Ohio, which was then part of the Northwest Territory. In 1814, Jackson and other settlers arrived in Martinsville from nearby Fort Wayne and founded the town on what is now Indian Hill Road. The first courthouse was built in 1818 and it served as the judicial center for much of northwestern Indiana until capacity became too tight for residents to handle. The first school opened in 1831 and it soon became known as Martinsville High School. The current high school campus includes three large campuses: one for boys (grades 9-12) on Main Street between Center Street and Elm Avenue; one for girls (grades 7-9) on East Main Street between Center Street and Elm Avenue; and one for JROTC cadets on North River Drive between Centre Street and Elm Avenue. The primary industry in Martinsville is agriculture but there are also some businesses such as a gas station, grocery store, auto dealership/repair shop, pizza place, barbershop/ beauty salon etc.. There are also several churches including two Baptist Churches (One brick church building dating back to 1839), Methodist Church (built 1907), Catholic Church (built 1928), Islam Mosque (opened 2004), all with full services available every day except Thanksgiving Day).

Martinsville was founded in 1824 by George Catlett. The town was named for General James Martins, who had fought in the War of 1812. The first store was built in 1825. In 1830, a post office was established and the town became part of Evans Township. In 1834, the township split into two parts and Martinsville became an independent town. On July 1, 1840, Martinsville incorporated as a village. On December 8, 1851, the village merged with Evans Township to form Martin Township. Martinsville lost its autonomy on October 15, 1957 when it merged with nearby Carmel to form Carmel-Martin County.
