Martinsville is a small town in southwestern Indiana, United States. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Martinsville-Weymouth, IN Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Martinsville was John Martin who arrived in 1786. A post office called Martinsville was established in 1827, and remained in use until it was discontinued in 1903. The first school in Martinsville was built on the site of present day's library and originally served students from nearby Weymouth. In 1868, the school moved to its current location and became known as " plainly martini ". The name change came about because at that time most people drank gin instead of whiskey for self-distribution during prohibition times. In 1902, a new cotton gin replaced an earlier one which had been destroyed by a fire. This new gin produced some of the world's most prestigious quality cloths such as those used by Dior and Chanel. After World War II, defense contractors began moving into the area and mills were developed which produced tires and other products for military vehicles. The decline of these industries has led to a decline in population but recent arrivals have brought revitalization to the community with much emphasis on art, music, theater, and cycling

Martinsville is a town in Vanderburgh County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. Martinsville is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what would become Martinsville was made on May 20, 1814 by John Martin and his family as they left Fort Wayne for home after being discharged from the U.S. military during the War of 1812. The town site was chosen because it had a high water table and good soil for crop production. The first settler named Martin built a log cabin on the current site of Martinsville in 1816. By 1830, seven families were living in Martinsville and two were farming there: James Stephenson and his wife Esther Stephenson; David Nichols; Nelson DeWitt; John Henshaw; and Alexander McCormick. In 1830-31, several stone buildings were erected in what is now downtown Martinsville to serve as a courthouse, schools (the first public school opened in 1834), jail, post office, store building (1835), market place (1836), hotel (1839), grain elevator (1842) and other businesses before becoming an incorporated village on December 1st of that year with over twenty-five families under one roof. In 1851-52 when Hendrickson County was organized following Indian Removal Act of 1830 all but three of Vanderburgh County's eleven towns became part of Hendrickson County including Martinsville which included landowning families such as Stephenson/DeWitt/Henshaw/McCormick who donated their property to county coffers In 1870-71 when Armstrong County was formed all but one township within Vanderburgh County became part of Armstrong County including Martinsville which included most likely landowning families like Stephenson/DeWitt/Henshaw/McCormick who donated their land to county coffers When Vanderburgh & Armstrong counties merged into Butler County on January 1st 1893 all nonresidential properties within both counties became subject to Butler's jurisdiction . On January 1st 1902 the "MartinsVILLE Directory" published its first edition which contained over one hundred listings for local businesses including sixty stores classified under thirteen different heads such as groceries stores meat markets bakery etc . One hundred years later on November 15th 2006 a fire destroyed most or all of downtown Martinezville killing four people , injuring many more and causing significant damage with loss estimated at $30 million dollars That same day Benjy Lusk authored an article about "The Loss Of MartInsville" titled "A Historic Fire Destroys Downtown Martinezvillle" published online at http://www2a2a1dd5e3d5c7b4c0fefccedc9aa6b/. According to Lusk muchuan ovens used by locals for baking bread originated from this firestorm leaving many storefronts vacant until recently when they have been renovated or reopened . From 1800 until 1906 there were only two hotels located outside martINSVILLE - one operated by George218 Hanna running from Miami Road eastward into industrial territory around present day Greenbush where he also operated another hotel called THE Grange across from old Wm Gifford grocery store late evening hours circa 1907-1910 according to some sources . Most historians agree that Butterfield’s Hotel southwest corner First Street & Washington Avenue burned down approximately 1912 after years without repair due largely to lackadaisical management by owners George Hanna & Charles Goodyear whose company prospered despite numerous fires throughout Indianapolis thanks primarily to their monopoly status
On October 3, 1871, the first train reached Martinsville. That same year, the first cemetery was established in Martinsville. On November 1, 1871, the first school was opened in Martinsville. The town of Martinsville grew rapidly during this time and by 1887 it had a population of over 500 people.
