The first settler in Martinsville was Nicholas Deasy. He and his family came to America in 1795 from England. In 1814, John Stonington founded the small town of Martinsville on land that he had bought from Nicholas Deasy. The name Martinsville was given to the settlement by General James Mason during the War of 1812 because of its location near Fort Wayne on the Mississippian River. Martin Luther King Jr.'s father, Dr. Martin Luther King Sr., was born in Martinsville in 1929 and died there in 1968. Reverend Jesse Jackson also grew up there and attended high school there before moving on to college at Howard University where he earned a degree in political science and then served as an assistant professor at Dexter Ave Community College before becoming mayor of Chicago from 1989 to 1991.

The group traveled through central Indiana on their way to find a route to California. They passed through Martinsville on their way north, and during their stay, they erected a log cabin in what is now the downtown area. In 1814, the Lewis and Clark Expedition again passed through Martinsville while traveling down the Wabash River. This time they were looking for a new route to California. Upon their return trip, they reported that they had discovered an existing road leading east from Fort Wayne to Vincennes – this became known as the explorers’ trail. In 1818, John Marshall was appointed justice of the peace for Evans County. He soon found himself involved in various legal cases involving land grants and land sales withinMartinsville limits. In 1830 he married Martha COOPER; together they founded the town of Marshalltown near present-day Martinsville. During World War II, Martinsville played host to numerous military exercises and events such as Operation Overlord (1944). It also served as headquarters for Army Ground Forces Command until May 1945 when it was transferred to Air Force Base Indianapolis after World War II ended.
